What do you do when a Tesla waves at you?!?

I was caught unaware. A white Model Y drove by and the owner had a huge smile on his face and waved at/to me. I was taken aback. I meekly waved back with a quizzical look on my face.

Now I know Jeep people have their thing. And I often waved at other bolts. And there was always a point and nod when passing another motorcycle.

But we AREN'T the same breed. Do I now wave at every EV going by? Where does it end?

I need info. I need facts. I need limits and structure. Guidelines. I didn't think I needed Driver +, but I might if I'm waving to everybody going down the road.

My wife has a Tesla Y, I would never get a Tesla. Having an EV does not mean we are all same breed. If folks want to wave or give thumbs up, cool, will return, but I don’t see an EV vs ICE us vs them club.

I wave back when I notice. I tend to wave at some of the more rare EVs as I think its cool to see people buying in.

Yes, with how excited he looked I figured that was the likely explanation. Still...I'm Team Rivian. I don't just give my waves away! Now if we're stopped and he wants to talk, I'm good. But my driving waves will be limited to Rivians. And maybe something electric and funky. EV and three wheels get a wave from me. But I'm ODD like that.

I would love to see the EV enthusiast community adopt the peace sign . This is/was very prevalent among air-cooled VW enthusiasts, and it reminds me a lot of the way we feel about our Rivian R1's and similar EVs.

When I drive my 1975 Land Cruiser I sometimes get the thumbs up or a honk and I always smile back or answer a question at a light if they have it.

Only a few people have done that with the Rivian and it was mostly back in July when I first got it and it was more rare.

Personally I don't want to wave at anyone else on the road, but it's also not big deal to wave back and acknowledge someone's interest in your car if they are just celebrating the fun of driving these things.
