Honestly it just didn’t like make me go wow. I thought a 80-90k car would do that. I never spent more than what 40. It’s cool no doubt. I say old I’m 47. The three rows is cool but what do you do in the mountains in the snow. You can’t take it to big bear in a snow storm. Were you going to charge it? That’s when I say I’m old I would rather spend that 80k on like a new ram or something. Just putting my feelings out there. I don’t care about flipping for any money but it just feels like a waste to just cancel. Too bad you can’t just give your spot to someone. I work down the street so maybe I will go drive the truck and check that one out. Thanks for the input y’all I appreciate it.
If you don’t want it, then you don’t want it. But don’t make up things like you “can’t” drive it in a snowstorm. That’s absolutely not true. And I’m not sure which new Ram you’re getting for $40k that will “wow” you, but I wish you good luck on your search. The fact that you decided to post this thread means you aren’t convinced you should cancel either. At least use actual facts to make your decision.

The OP is exactly right, you cannot drive it in the snow, it takes 48 hours to recharge and then only drives like 30 miles, and RJ kills baby seals to make the seat covers. All R1S reservation holders who read and understand this should cancel immediately.

what didnt impress you about the R1S? i was all-in on the R1S but after reading a lot of reviews and doing a test drive, having some doubts as well.
have you considered switching to the R1T?
I am in the same boat as you except
I have driven the S yet. I am considering changing to the T given one days rental of one on Turo which was awesome since the ride was fantastic. What happened on your test drive to further your doubts and was it post the December update or not?

the point was driving it up there when it’s snowing and not having a place to charge it. Pretty sure there isn’t a solution to that unless you put a charging station up on the road I guess and then hoped the snow plow doesn’t bury it in the berm. I never said you couldn’t drive it in a snowstorm. It’s obviously capable enough to do that probably pretty well. I realize my PHEV battery is not as large but it’s useless up there if you need to charge It. I guess you just would plan to keep enough battery and drive back down in that situation. A new ram is not 40k no it’s not.A nice one is similar in price to the R1. I was just Putting my thoughts out there to see what people thought that’s all.

After taking delivery I was on fence. As such a different experience. Now a month into it, by far my favorite vehicle. Amazing experience. I guess I get the Teslaites now, lol.

I’m selling an awesome 2019 Ram Rebel if interested. I didn’t think that would happen a month ago. Too bad your so far away.

Ok… except there are several people here that have successfully driven their R1s to Big Bear. Have you tried checking your route on ABRP and plotting out how you would make the trip? Also, if it was simply the location you were worried about and not the weather, wouldn’t the same thing apply in all seasons, not just winter? It seems like you are looking for odd reasons to not buy it. So don’t do it and I’m sure one of the thousands of people in line behind you will happily take your place.

That's a wishful asking price... Even though they are selling at quite a premium at the moment, by the time OP gets his in June-ish, prices will be quite a bit lower. I still can't believe the number of people taking delivery of an R1T and trying to flip it. They're all getting stuck with these trucks or selling at a loss now by the time they try and recover tax/license/insurance...

He should either commit and give it a real chance or let the reservation go.

Why would anyone not buy it and resell. To cancel a Rivian order is just nutzo, imho.
Would you buy an R1T right now at pre-march '22 price and try to resell it? Seriously... You're going to have between $82K and $85K invested after tax/title/license. They're selling used in that same range. Maybe $2K more in a few select places or if you have a less-common config and the right buyer sees it. That's a lot of brain damage to not make much money. Especially if you, like most people, have to take out financing to buy it in the first place.

There are more and more chargers every year so it would only be a temporary problem if any at all.

You reserved before the massive price increase.

So I'd do the math on the expected profits and go through with the purchase if the profits make it worthwhile.

If the profits don't make it worthwhile then cancel.

Generally speaking its not a good idea money wise to buy a vehicle during a serious recession.

This one, that one and the other one.

I pulled out one of my "garage queens" today. An ICE vehicle. Decided to go fill it up with gas. Total bill $101.14. Most I've ever spent at Electrify America is about $41 and that was because I didn't have the monthly subscription. A few weeks ago, I had to put brakes on the other garage queen. Yes, another ICE vehicle. That bill came to $674.

Thus far, in 12 years of owning EV's, thanks to one-pedal driving, I've NEVER once put brakes on my EV cars.

Also a few weeks ago, I pulled the third and last garage queen out of the garage because California told me I had to get it smogged. Because it never gets driven, they told me I had to drive it 100 miles and pollute the air so the computer would allow it to be smogged, because sometime in the past two years, I had to replace the battery on the same car. Not only was it a pain in the ass, but spent $69 on the smog, plus another $115 on having the oil changed while it was there. By the way, within the past few months, the other two queens also mandated smog checks. Not so much about the money, but the hassle of having to go do it.

So far, NEVER once have I had to have the oil changed or get an EV smogged. For someone like me, time is extremely valuable and having to spend hours of time going to handle this stuff is just not efficient. For those that are used to it, they don't think much of it. Especially those that have never experienced living with an EV. Once you've experienced the benefits of EV ownership, you quickly realize how much of a PITA it is to deal with all the crap you have to deal with on an ICE vehicle, aside from cost to do it all.

Fortunately, all three required smog checks within a few month period, so got them all out of the way. But, in another two years, California will make me go through the whole process all over.

That's also not to mention that, because I rarely drive any of the garage queens, the fuel goes bad after a year or two, so have to drain the tanks to put fresh gas in it. If I had an EV garage queen, could let it sit for years and wouldn't have to worry about any of it. Keep it plugged in, which I have to do for the ICE cars as well, and I could go out 5 years later, hop in and go.

If Tesla ever gets the Roadster built, it could be the first. Or when GM releases the first all electric Vette, it could join the party too.

Anyway, just a few examples of the difference in daily life between an ICE and an EV. That's before giving any consideration to the massive performance benefits, handling benefits from low Center of Gravity, the advanced tech, etc, etc.

Well I guess I’m canceling. I put my deposit on the truck in December of 2018. I really wanted a rivian but…. I finally was able to see a R1S today and drive it and honestly I wasn’t very impressed. I guess I’m just old and I don’t want to go full electric. I currently have an outlander PHEV so half/half is about as far electric as I want to go. If I could get a half/half with about 100 miles in range and it still have interior like a regular truck or suv well that’s my dream.
I don’t really know what else to do other than just get my deposit back. Seems like a waste with the discounted price but what other options are there? I can still configure whatever I want but this is my current configuration. The delivery estimate currently says June.

thoughts or comments?

would be nice to be able to sell your position at that price. I would have interest.

#MURICA ????

I suggest eBay Motors, take out the middleman. Worked well for me with the Lightning.

You're gonna love it and keep it though. Even after 6k miles I was getting $110k+ offers on the R1T, but it wasn't enough to tear The Grinch and I apart.
$110k offers? That must have been last summer - car market is very soft right now - Rivians included.

Cancel and don’t try to “soft sell” the reservation.

Correct, during a July/August road trip. People left business cards asking to contact them, it was truly bizarre. I sold the Lightning in August as well right before prices plummeted ?

R1S is still fetching steep prices though! But the crux is $35k profit wasn't enough for me to give it up.
