If the data for CarPlay or AA runs through your phone, and not the vehicle's LTE connection, I can see that right there being the driver to not implement it. That way drivers are essentially forced to buy the LTE subscription if they want the high quality audio and live traffic in maps, etc. We still don't know what that cost will be, but you can rest assured Rivian will be making at least some profit off those subscriptions

I'll take it with a large grain of salt, but I'll also take it as a whisp of a ray of hope.

Agree to an extent. App remote control functionality that exists (charge, heated seats, etc.) and future features could still warrant the LTE subscription. Not sure the maps or App features today are worth much to me or others on this forum.

Carplay access for a fee per month would be my guess. Let the blue check memes get reused for Carplay pay wall access.

The amount of money they would make is pretty small. If they charged say $10 a month for LTE and had to pay the provider $5 a month then they make $60 a year per vehicle that takes this up. That is in the low million dollar range over the next few years so there is not that much of a financial driver - which could explain why LTE is free through to the end of the year.

My suspicion is that Rivian had their hands tied when Amazon came to the table to invest.
Rivian followed the Tesla script. (Many) customers aren’t happy to regress to the stone age. Rivian hasn’t publicly acknowledge a path to close this gap.

Amazon hasn’t blocked anything.

Although I appreciate the option. I'm kinda hoping they keep improving the onboard navigation system. There are a lot of hills and trails around here where I get 0 cell coverage. For sure it needs work. It routes very weird sometimes.

Even the Tesla allows you to enter an address and get routing when the LTE connection is too weak.
Google (and I believe Apple as well) allow you to download offline maps. I use this feature frequent when traveling places I know will have limited reception (domestically and internationally). It allows me to continue to use maps even when my phone has no cell signal or WiFi.

I would love CP as an addition to my R1T. The vehicle bluetooth is erratic asF$#K. I constantly losing connection with audible on my phone and then I’m futzing with my phone to get it playing again and either pulling off the road or dangerously messing with my phone while driving. Just give me CP for using the apps on my phone easily instead of reinventing them all.

My Guide just checked in since I picked my R1S up yesterday and said 'No Carplay/AA in the works'. Just not something they want to do.

We still don't know what that cost will be...
We do know that AT&T is the provider, who also provides in-car WiFi for a few dozen other manufactures including Jeep, Audi, Porsche, Ford, Mazda, Nissan, Land Rover, Subaru and many others. Looking at the plans that AT&T or these manufacturers list on their websites, it looks like a charge of around $20/month is the going rate for 'unlimited data'. Or if the the buyer prefers to not be on a plan, there are some pre-paid options to the tune of around $120 for 6 months or $200/year.

Probably safe to bet that Rivian's AT&T WiFi plans will be along the same lines.

Makes that decision pretty easy IMO.
Not seeing the value add unless some amazing features roll out between now and next year

I was thinking the same, that it would be $20 for unlimited just like the others.

Although my Chevy had the 4G LTE Hotspot through AT&T and it was $15 a month. Remote Lock/Start was free for 1/ years. Rivian could justify the extra $5 more for all the other feature that some other auto manufacturers charge monthly for. The Hotspot in the Chevy was just that and maybe that's why it was cheap because it had horrible infotainment connectivity.

The worst was VW Car-Net at $35 a month just for remote lock and GPS tracking . What a joke! (I think now the remote lock/unlock is free for 5 years and then you get shafted after that)
