Key fob update failed and bricked itself

Just tried the key fob update which failed with the message that says it won't work again until the keyfob is serviced. I confirmed it doesn't work anymore. It was working fine before. Thankfully this isn't my primary key but I'm not looking forward to being without it for months while I wait for a service appt. Did this happen to anyone else? Any ideas to try?

Is there a soft restart for the key? Pull out the battery and let it sit? Some internal buttons?
