So, after loving my R1T I thought I might be better suited to an R1S so I purchased one to replace my truck. I received my new R1S on Saturday and it’s great - save for the gap in the rear door.

Pics are attached, but it seems pretty egregious to me. I have put in a service request, but I’m concerned this will not be corrected with the excuse of “it passed the water spray test”. For 100k, this shouldn’t look like this. Hard to tell from the pic but it’s 3/8” out.

I’m curious if the adjustment procedure is known? Also curious what other folks who have had this adjusted have discovered? Was it corrected

The passenger side is fine/flush.

Most have this problem. I have a service appointment today about this and several other alignment panel. This is the most noticable of my R1s. A buddy took delivery a few months ago with same issue and brought it in for service. He said they did not correct it much.

I think there's too much variability in how the sheet metal in the back is stitched together. A lot can be done with the lid through adjustments but there is still a limit to that.

Let us know how your appointment goes.

This is unacceptable on a 100k truck in my view. I’m already leaning towards selling the S for other reasons and this would simple add another reason.

Yes it is an eyesore for some. It doesn't bother me that much. I see plenty of people are having the same issue. Will keep you update

Yeah, same issue here, perhaps closer to 1/4" but on both sides. I've also noticed the seal at the upper right corner is pulling away and starting to roll over with the motion of the liftgate (seems to be attached with an adhesive which perhaps didn't bond properly). Mine goes in the shop tomorrow to see what they can do about it. The poor fit of the liftgate is really my only complaint about the vehicle so hopefully they can make some improvement. We shall see.

I think we should now know why the S was so far delayed over the T. I'm willing to put my money on the fact that the lift gate wasn't so much supply constrained as difficult to get functioning properly and consistently. They probably should have went with a different design as it doesn't seem like they got this one nailed down too well.

Quick - I'm interested in what the other reasons are - assuming it's something with the vehicle itself. I've got a pending delivery but wavering. I agree with you on the panel gaps being unacceptable.

Look around to see if there are some misaligments of the panels when you take it to service center. Those are big contributing factors for windnoise. I read that the service center can fix most of those and reseal it. The lift gate gap is a b*tch according to many here.

The vehicle itself is great, but I simply don't find the SUV to be differentiating enough relative to others on the market. The R1T is unique, useful and perfectly sized for a truck. I thought I would like the SUV more, but I'm finding that not to be the case.

For example, as a comparison, I also own a 2023 Land Rover Discovery that I thought might be eliminated by the R1S. Some comparison points:

- The interior quality in the Discovery is substantially nicer than the R1S (also, the obligatory CarPlay mention...).
-- Leather quality in R1S suffers compared to the Disco
-- storage compartments - R1S lacks front seat storage. The lack of center console, glovebox, proper storage in the doors, etc.
-- Fit & Finish of the interior
-- Sound deadening and ambiance - never hear the suspension moving, air compressor, or other noises.
-- Plus for the R1 - The seats in the Disco are substantially firmer than the R1
- The rear cargo area is not well thought out in the R1S:
-- With the seats down, the armrests on the sides are in the way and consume valuable cargo space
-- The seats don't fold all the way into the floor (making loading actual cargo cumbersome)
-- Rear seat management in general is simply very painful/difficult
- Lack of full-size spare tire support (Discovery has full size under the car)
-- Currently the R1S doesn't have a spare at all
- The sunroof shades in the Disco eliminate afternoon sun/heat
- Field of View is better in the Disco
- Turning radius/maneuverability better in the Disco. The Rivian is large by comparison.
- More expensive than my fully-loaded Disco. ($15k more)

Most of the above things are small, but these are differentiators in this segment of the market. The only real differentiator the R1S has is this market is that it's electric and their tech is more cutting edge.

I drove my R1T, my Disco & R1S back to back to back to back yesterday to try and decide if I want to invest in the 20s or list it for sale. I'm still undecided.

The false floor has an additional detent where you can make it flush with the folded down seats when you put it in that spot.

Super helpful and some similar concerns I have - sunshades, usefulness of rear seats, road noise while driving. I haven't been in an R1S yet but videos I see make me feel that getting to the 3rd row is not easy. I'm putting three kids into this. If I can't easily use the third row then why spring for a car that has one.
Thanks.

This doesn't make it "flush". It simply makes a ramp on the rear. So when you try and put somethign large and flat in (think, monitor box), you now have a gap under the rear where the product rocks.

But these aren't huge issues. Simply things that have already been solved in other cars.

Same for the ridiculous proximity key and lack of ability to turn the vehicle off when I don't want to engage with it (but this is true of the T and the S).

The road noise while driving (wind noise) is on par with my Disco. Maybe a little louder but marginal. But you hear other noises in the R1S - the suspension, the air compressor for the suspension is always on if you leave it in Auto (as it adjusts from Standard to Low while on the highway, etc.).

Personally, if I had to use the rear seats with any regularity, especially for buckling in small kids, I don't think this would be on my short list.

If I had spent a few days with the R1S beforehand, I don't think I would have purchased it.

No photos of the R1S that Rivian advertises has this gap. It needs to be fixed, it will affect resale value if nothing else. I have an appointment this week for mine; will apprise.
