I harbor delusions that one of my daughters will get, as her first, vehicle, an XJ Jeep Cherokee that we can work on together to lift it and do an engine swap on, etc. This, in a desert tan, is now on the list.

In theory this should actually help with the aero. Yes, its heaver but I think that would be made up for from the better air flows over a dimpled/rough surface.
This is a bit of an oversimplification. Dimpling makes sense on a golf ball because the majority of drag comes from pressure drag caused by the wake region. There is very little laminar flow on a golf ball, so it actually helps to create a small turbulent layer where the boundary layer detaches later than it otherwise might.

Vehicles like the R1T/R1S are optimized for an extremely low drag coefficient and to detach the boundary layer very in a specific manner (hence the spoilers at the end of the cab). A rougher surface (especially an arbitrarily rough one, not carefully dimpled) is at least as likely to foul those design factors while increasing skin friction, rather than improving aero.

Tl;dr: Drag is a multivariate phenomenon including skin friction, frontal area, pressure drag, etc. Dimpling or roughness only helps some of those (mainly pressure drag for blunt objects where early airflow separation is a factor) and hurts others. I highly doubt it makes up for the weight and skin friction penalties in this case.

I have an XJ that is bedliner coated that I'm trying to sell at the moment. It's not desert tan though ?

Not my thing, but I appreciate the boldness and off-road toughness of this.

My one suggestion is to powdercoat those wheels a single uniform matte black color. The two-tone, glossy OEM AT darks clash a bit with this matte kevlar look.
