Great to see this one open! I'm in ATL area and head up to Asheville and Boone at least a couple times a year at this point. Blowing Rock and Greenville RAN make that much easier. Now I just need that one in Cherokee to open and for them to get something in Asheville (there are at least some EA chargers in Asheville).

I was just looking at Plugshare and at least there is a DCFC charger in Cherokee now, even if it's only 80ish kW

yeah, and it's by a coffee shop and a fairly short walk to the creek park, but 80kW is kind of crappy.

The RAN in Cherokee looks like it'll be just south of town on 441 by a McDonald's, Arby's, and Food Lion. There were concrete pours in a parking lot there at least as far back as April. Don't know 100% it's RAN, but it sure looks like a good guess.

I was looking at it today thinking about doing the tail of the dragon here soon and trying to figure out how to manage it, since it's probably a stretch to get there and back from Greenville without any charging. I think that charger can give me a quick boost to be able to make it home.

It's not on their current map with "soon" RAN sites, but the original map of the "full" RAN had a point in Robbinsville, which would be perfect for the Tail of the Dragon and Nantahala area.

I do wonder if that one is going to have to be killed off because of power infrastructure in the area though. Robbinsville is a pretty small town smack in the middle of mountains with no major highways nearby. Maybe TVA has a big line off a dam that can be dropped in for a RAN site?

I'm in Columbia, and did the Tail plus some cool off-roading near Little Switzerland and Spruce Pine. The fast charger at Sam's on Patten Ave in Asheville can get crowded, so the new Shell Recharge at the Hotspot in Inman at 150 kW served us well coming and going.

I needed to make sure the truck would manage to get into my garage, so I didn't pull the trigger three years ago. But once I knew it would fit through a friend who came over in January, I was driving mine (bought used) in February.

Headed to ATL tomorrow for R1S pickup. Have had my Model S since 2014, but I am excited about a new experience (and challenge). Praying for no issues on pickup.....

Has anybody charged up at the Greenville RAN and then headed to Boone/Blowing Rock? If so, what SOC (or estimated mileage range) did you have when you left Greenville and what did you have when you got to Boone or Blowing Rock?

I'll be heading up that way s00n from the Atlanta area, and the app's trip planner wants me to have something like a 75-80% charge (275-280 miles in conserve or all-purpose) to arrive in Boone with ~40 miles remaining. It's not even 150 actual miles. I know it's a good bit uphill, but I want to make sure I'm not sitting in Greenville a lot longer than I need to be. Current estimate is >30 minute charge. I'd prefer to be in and out in 20 since I'll have wife and dog.

Side note, the trip planner has been a bit all over the place. I looked a couple days ago and it was saying a 43 minute stop was required in Greenville. Normally it shows 25-35, tending toward 30+. I enter the exact parameters every time. 100% SOC departing, conserve, same start and end addresses, arrive with 15% SOC.

Thanks!

I haven’t made this trip personally but I can’t imagine you’d use more than 65%.

fyi 3 of 6 chargers (1ABC) are down at the Greenville RAN as of today, I went and charged during lunch

Thanks for the warning about Greenville. I’m guessing it was one of the shared banks that was completely down? If so, that means much slower charging for everyone if there are 3 there at the same time. My backup plan is probably a Circle K charger in Gastonia where I’d head north off 85 toward Boone.

Yea it was one whole bank. I was the only one there and got 218 kWh max, from 25 to 72%.

I did Greenville to Grandfather Mountain (charged there) and then up to Blowing Rock. Discovered all six chargers were offline :( - had to level 2 charge while visiting friends, then side-track to Asheville to get back home. I also drive like a maniac so your mileage may vary.

Yeah, Grandfather Mountain's close enough for estimating. Do you remember your SOC or estimated range when you left Greenville and when you got to Grandfather Mountain?
