Would also be nice to see the details of the new setup... you can't replace two 18AH batteries with one 18AH battery and a capacitor. Capacitors are not batteries...

If I understand this thread correctly, where the second battery was is now a large capacitor the same physical size & shape as the previous battery, and the only way to tell them apart is by looking at the cables? Whoa. ?

+1 for pics.

Edit: also, what is your VIN? Ty!!

This explanation now makes sense. I took delivery of my R1S on 6/2 with an 8000 VIN and informed of the one battery configuration by my delivery guide.
After checking under frunk cover panel and seeing two red battery holders I thought the guide was mistaken. It now appears she could be right. Now I need to check more throughly and come to an understanding about what this means.

for those of us who didn't follow the battery thing... why did they move to 1 battery vs. 2?

^ mainly because if one of the 12V batts died it completely disabled the vehicle.. and if the wrong one died.. even connecting a jumper pack to the connections in the rear bumper still wouldn't revive the vehicle. It was just a problematic design.

Speculation time:

As far as why a capacitor? My best guess is that two batteries did okay with sudden load spikes, but a capacitor and battery combo could be even better at increasing the longevity of the battery.

What sudden load spikes, you ask? The compressor for air suspension is my best guess. Allegedly I have an upgraded one of those, as well. Might be related.

I'd be idly curious how they got around the whole "each battery powers half the vehicle", "two separate fuse panels", etc. (that seem to be pretty widely confirmed). It's gotta be more than just one wire change, right? #shrug

Wiring diagrams would be nice at some point, lol. ?

I’m not buying the single battery thing.

You don’t have a choice. It all depends on your production date.

Well, everything runs off a common 12V ground to begin with so that's no issue because the two batts were connected there all along and there should be no isolated 12V circuits (something that needs to run off it's own 12V battery) so just connecting the positive post from the removed battery to the positive post of the remaining battery shouldn't pose a problem. The capacitor is there just to prevent voltage sag when a larger load (like when the compressor is first starting up) suddenly comes on line.

I interpreted "buying" as "believing", not "purchasing".

I know. ?

I posted this thread to be helpful and share new information. I don’t understand the motivation of randos casting doubt on this. It isn’t my job to convince them. Everyone is welcome to do as they wish with what I shared.

No I’m referring to it being a thing. I have dual and I have physically verified.

So… I don’t doubt that this is what you were being told. I doubt what they told you and the source not knowing enough. That’s all.

Proof is in the pudding, I’ll wait till someone post detailed pics.

Thanks for the new information though.
