Put in my R1S Nav trip from SF Bay Area to Madison WI. Gave warning to not attempt due to range, Kind of expected this. ABRP had a route but added a day to drive, My Range anxiety is reinforced, The R1 has been a rockstar all told, 6m0/6Kmi. Any tips? Want to tote a load of stuff to Granddaughter at Wisc U.

Not sure why your R1S told you that you couldn't get there due to range. Should be fairly straight forward. SF to Salt Lake to Denver to Omaha to Iowa City to Madison. I just went thru Nebraska and part of Iowa on my way from Denver to Minnesota and it was no problem.

Seems doable, ABRP shows longest stretch around 213 miles from SF, CA to Madison WI. Seems long as it has 10 hours of charging over 12 stops. I only show the shortest ABRP route being around 100 miles further than google maps.

Based on my maiden voyage around the country last February, I would have no concerns making that drive.

The Nav in the R1 may not have all of the stations. I saw that message in my R1S on a couple of stretches on my long trip, I ended up just using ABRP for routing and plugging in the next charger in the nav so it would prepare for the charge as I was getting there.

Good point. I noticed that too on my Denver to northern Minnesota trip. The Nav didn't have all the charging stations available.

I agree, with some planning I would have no concerns making this trip.

Yes, ABRP adds 10 hours for 15 charging stops, but that's assuming you're driving non-stop. If you plan your overnight stops for places where you can charge, you will save 1 charging stop and ~1 hour every night. So 2200 miles in 5 days would reduce the number of stops to 10 stops and 5 extra hours if you choose your stops right. This depends on how far you plan to go every day. Obviously if you try to do this in 3 days instead you will end up being closer to plan, but still choosing your overnight stops right will save you time and money, and you can avoid anxiety by planning for an overnight in the middle of any stretch of country that you're concerned about crossing.

I have found ABRP to be a little conservative on long trips like this, so I find I always have a higher SoC when I arrive at the next charger than predicted. That's a good thing!

Having made the drive from Portland OR to Eagle River WI. Despite having to travel through Colorado it was totally doable, what you are proposing is easier.

The Rivian NAV has always struggled with long distance planning for example after driving from OR to AZ last summer I tried to route back and it told me no.

As has been said plan the trip in ABRP and then use the Rivian NAV to navigate charger to charger on the route.

The main concern is the time. Do you want to take the time to wait and charge or do you want to get there quickly? The Rivian will get you there eventually.

Probably not much longer with the Rivian. I just took a 2300 mile round trip road trip and really didn’t notice it taking any longer than usual. But I haven’t tried to cannonball run a road trip in 20 years.

The 1100 mile drive I just did last week took 15 hours with two ten minute fuel stops. In my Rivian that’s an 18 hour drive. Not the end of the world but still significant if you’re making long distances in a day.

Exactly. Cannonball run. You stopped twice for 20 min total? I don’t think that’s typical.

Yep, 650 mile range in my truck when not towing means fuel stops are usually dictated by when I need to pee, get food, stretch, etc. No reason to take it slow and have short days if you have somewhere to be.

Pretty sure that’s not typical. 7 hours without stopping seems extreme but cool that you can do that.

If you are stopping for the nights probably not much different but driving straight thru it is a pretty big hit on longer drives in an EV.

My example from this year, Florida Panhandle to Southern CA is 2000 miles, in the Rivian R1S it took 39 hours driving straight thru. A couple of months later, same trip opposite direction in a Jeep GC that was getting 23 mpg with a 24 gallon tank trip took 30 hours.

Edit: Just to add, I would not hesitate to do it again in an EV. Being retired, that 9 hours is no big deal.
