Saturday was an interesting day for sure. It was our annual memorial Brewer game in honor of my father who passed away 5 years ago. Loaded up the R1S with the fam and all of the tailgating essentials and partied with 50 of our closest friends and family members. I left the frunk open as I was constantly getting stuff from it and putting stuff away. This led to many family members asking about it, most shocked that I would go to an EV (I’ve always been a fast ICE guy, still am). So the entire day I had nothing but goodwill to share with the family about Rivian. I was actually able to sway some of them closer to middle ground.
Fast forward to 10:30 PM and it’s time to go home. We get my mom and 2 kids in the back, me shotgun and my wife in the drivers seat. She goes to put it in reverse and nothing. Try again, nothing. So I get in the drivers seat and give it a shot, nothing. There are a bunch of error lights along the lower left of the dash and a big ‘Driving Disabled – Service park brake system’ message above that. I went through the motions of an infotainment reset, and then a hard reset with no change in status. I reached out to Rivian service and was instructed to perform 3 hard resets with a minute wait in between each. Still nothing. At that point the service rep says there is nothing they can do, and that it needs to be towed in for service. He thinks he can get a tow out by 12:30.
By now the parking lot attendants are telling me I’ll have to leave or my vehicle will be towed. I explain to them the situation and they repeat that the city will tow it, as there is another game Sunday morning. So I send the family home in an Uber and decide to wait with the car so that a city tow doesn’t make things worse. Midnight comes and goes with no tow scheduled. My service rep was a trooper, and kept calling me every 30 minutes to give me the bad news that he couldn’t find a tow. By 2:30 AM I ask if he can contact the local authorities and ask that they not tow my vehicle if they can promise to have it out of the lot by 10 AM. They agree, and I Uber home by 3 AM. By 5:30 AM my R1S is back in my driveway and I’m frantically removing all of our tailgating supplies. Then the tow driver says that he won’t tow it to the Chicago service center and leaves it in my driveway.
That brings us to the present. I have a rental to drive, and I’m waiting for a tow to take her down to Chicago.
Back to Saturday night and into Sunday morning, I was extremely disappointed and had more than a few choice words. I was swearing up and down (after the family Uber’d home) that I was done with the Rivian and would be moving on to something else. What really got me upset was the fact that I spread tons of goodwill that day, and of all of the thousands of cars that were in the lot that night, mine was the sole car left. While I waited for the tow that never showed up that night, I vented my frustrations on a Rivian FB group. That was a mistake. God forbid someone has a bad experience and displays some honest, uninhibited emotion. The nicest responses were that I was overreacting. Lesson learned. I completely forgot that only the most perfect humans respond to ranting FB posts, and are quick to point out all of the flaws in my personal way of thinking.
TLDR – My Rivian R1S with 7500 miles was bricked Saturday night with a ‘Driving Disabled – Service park brake system’ error. I was stranded in an empty parking lot past midnight. I am currently waiting for a tow to take her to the Chicago service center.
Has anyone else encountered this error? What was your experience?
Thanks,
Ben
