My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
TL;DR - RANs are faster than my last experience; uphill clobbers range worse than I remember; Utica res is beautiful; selling my rooftent.

Took the Long Dog, wife and son (adult-ish daughter opted to stay home, throw a party, and piss off my neighbors) camping to Union Reservoir off Highway 4 in the Sierras this weekend. Tried Utica first, got skunked on campsites, but there was a loaded up S with an adventure trailer at Sandy Flat campground. Nice rig, if you’re out there.

Truck of course handled it just fine. Used the RAN in Manteca (which was almost full when we got there!) and charged up to 100% for the drive up. Arrived, 110 miles later, with about 43% remaining. Used approx 4% on various camp-related activities - getting in and out for stuff, leaving Long Dog there overnight, hiding from a brief thunderstorm, powering the Smeg kettle, etc. Running 20” OE tires at 48psi cold, 52 hot. Conserve mode for a good chunk of the climb up to 7k feet.

Return trip - departed with 39%, got to the highway with about 33%, conserve downhill and into the valley. Arrived with around 19% (54 miles) of indicated range at the Manteca RAN, charged up to about 91%. Back to HMB with 65% remaining - all-purpose, speed of traffic (75+ when possible). 84 miles, 26% range used. I would have stopped charging at a lower %, but we barely had enough time for lunch as it was.

Camp Mode was a little aggravating at times, but it was mostly intuitive. Self-leveling was fantastic with the RTT. The truck looked donked - very silly.

The Smittybilt tent was truly great. Easy setup/tear down, very much kept us warm and comfortable. But it’s not going to work out for our family longer-term, so it’ll be up for sale in another thread later today.

Thanks for the trip report! What are you going to replace the tent with?

I got invited to the party at your house but because I’m a responsible-ish adult I decided not to go.

Haven’t yet decided. Would love to go with. a full-height rack setup and a 4-person tent, but that doesn’t solve Long Dog doesn’t-like-elevation problem … so we might end up sticking with the standard ground tent.

Are you using that ladder correctly? I've only ever seen ladders where the extra telescoping stuff is supposed to be at the top of the ladder. They don't provide support if it's not done that way and the tents generally aren't designed to be self-supporting with a load of people in it.

Smittybuilt's instructions are a bit confusing here, but I'd expect the ladder would be easier to use with all of the collapsed part at the top anyway if it's not a requirement. Step distance will be consistent.

Oh yeah, I totally had that wrong after first setting it up, but figured it out shortly thereafter.

Good catch, though - thank you!

TL;DR - RANs are faster than my last experience;
Funnily enough I was up in Tahoe a few weeks ago and used the Sacramento and Truckee chargers (for the second time). I noticed that they ramped right up to 210kw and held a decent charging level for some time (even with many of the units in use). I presumed that was something to do with an OTA.

btw... these chargers are excellent.

Twice at the same RAN, we, ahem, ran out of time for lunch and I had to move the truck so I wasn’t squatting. They really are great.
