Smaller wheels are better in snow in my experience.

We went with Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT3s on the 20" wheels for winter. Also in Tahoe btw.
Did you notice the odometer or range calculations being off by much?

@timgradywy suggested those may have a different circumference than the OEM tires? Though I'm not sure how to check that.

Just curious, what did Rivian say?
They're still shipping, or have in stock 22s that are 115H rated. They said they're comfortable with the 115, and it just lowers your tow load. They said they could make a service note in case I needed to call them back with a tire shop if the shop is antsy about putting a 115 on our R1S when it shipped with a 116. Basically the same discussion we've all had, but I felt like it gave me enough cover that my risk is very small.

the Nokia LT3 match the OEM 20” diameter. They’re larger than the OEM 22” diameter. You can check the tire specs to confirm or go to a tire calculator on the web to see the exact impact.

Ah, so you meant they would mess up the odometer and stuff if you had 22s on, and didn't get Rivian to reconfigure it for 20s...

Understood.

This is why I went with 275/60r20 on our R1S.

I have the LT3 on my R1T in 275/65r20, but that's also a bit heavier and I was trying to maximize range with the tire choice on our R1S.

This is what I'm planning for my R1T. I'm going to go with the Nokian Outpost nAT 275/65r20 (which are already available, might I add) so that the odometer matches with my current 21" (3-season) OEM Pirelli Road Tire setup.

I had a brain misfire and wanted to clarify: I'm planning on 275/*60*r20 to match the diameter of the 275/55R21:

I live in Tahoe and starting to think about winter. We get a lot of snow.... So I plan to run true winter tires from sometime in November through May. It's half the year.

I have 22" rims with the OEM tires on my R1T and I'm debating what to do for true winter tries. I live on a hill and with a 7000 pound truck, I want to do everything I can to avoid sliding down that hill!

Looking the most at Nokian: https://www.nokiantires.com/rivian/ and only want studdless, because there can be a fair amount of bare pavement driving.

Obviously the cheapest and easiest option is to just swap my 22" tires for winter tires and get the Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV.

But it also looks like the Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta LT3 have a stud-less option and would fit the stock 20" rims at the correct size.

I kinda want the 20" rims and tires anyway for some summer dirt roads and stuff, though swapping rims is a pain with the SC visit involved. (I hope they make the wheels and tire size user configurable soon)

My question is, does anyone have winter driving experience with both 20" rims and 22" rims? Is there even much of a difference?

Bonus if anyone can vouch for how good either of those Nokian tires are.

Thanks!
20. no doubt about it.

Would you please provide a link to where these are available? From what I understand that aren’t out yet.

I thought you have to drop to 60 rather than 65 on 20s to match the 21s?

WillTheyFit.com is your friend.
Shows the Nokias Hakk**etc 275/60R20 are 3.28% smaller than the 275/65r20

we did custom wheels and larger tires on our Model Y and this tool was great help (as well as a previous owner who tried on sizes empirically to see if they’d rub against the wheel wells etc)

Sorry gents (and/or ladies... I can't tell by the usernames, but I suspect the majority of users here are male). I had a brain spasm and misrepresented. You're correct in that my intention is to go with 275/60R20.

Here's a link to the Hakkapeliitta OutPost nAT in that size. They were available when I was looking last week, but looks like they're out of stock. My local tire shop only show 2 in the warehouse, so hopefully there are more available soon-ish.

My tire shop did heavily recommend the Falken Wildpeaks for performance but couldn't speak to BEV efficiency on them, since I'm his first Rivian customer.

My backup plan is Hankook Dynapro AT2.

Edit: These appear to be in stock: https://www.prioritytire.com/nokian-outpost-at-275-60r20-115h-a-t-all-terrain-tire

I ran the LT3s on my R1T last season in Tahoe and wasn't impressed (but still much better than stock). I ran the X-ice on my model 3 and Y and those had so much more grip downhill. Definitely looking for something a bit better given the heft of the Rivian - maybe the x-ice with the lower load rating is the way to go..

In Tahoe Donner (Truckee) with a steep driveway..
