I already posted this on Reddit but I wanted to see if there will be anymore idea for me to try here:
09/18 Update: So as an update for this, the SC said they did extended test drive and checked the wiring but they were unable to determine what's wrong with the car. It seems like they are not going to fix it. I'm just wondering what they see in the captured logs right after the car faulted twice. Shouldn't the logs be telling them what to look for? At this point, if they are returning the car to me, it is essentially like telling me to just take the risk and drive it until it faults again. What should I do at this point?
Original Story:
I took delivery of an April built LE R1S in June, VIN 7xxx. The vehicle at delivery had some cosmetic issues (misaligned charge port, underbody panels not properly attached, misaligned hood, interior plastic trims not properly attached, some scratches on trims). Given that Rivian is still going through some growing pains, I thought that these could be fixed after delivery. The SC was able to fix some of these issues except for the charge port door misalignment which they concluded was due to the front fascia not being properly attached. We are still waiting for the part for it.
But the most dangerous thing about my 3 months of ownership has been about the multiple errors that forced the vehicle into limp mode. The first occurrence happened just a little over a week after taking delivery. The 7 members of my family were in the car and we were cruising along then the car suddenly entered into limp mode and disabled all driving assistance. I had to quickly pull over into a shopping center to restart the car and to clear out the error. The car was then taken to SC to fix all the issues at delivery and the limp mode. Rivian SC had the car for 2 weeks and they said the error *might* have to do with alignment which they took care of.
So I came picking up the car on a Wednesday. Took it home, didn't drive it on Thursday. Friday, I took my family out to dinner. Upon entering the car, the vehicle displayed error messages that sensors were not working and to proceed with caution. Again, I restarted the car and it cleared out the message for me to start driving. Just 10 or 15 mins into the trip, I tried to engage Driver+ and the dash showed a message about an alignment error and to service soon! This was after the SC confirmed that the alignment was corrected just 2 days prior!
So again, the car was back into SC. Test drove the car with a tech and confirmed alignment was ok but something might have been missed. The car was kept for a few days and I thought it was the end of my trouble (except for waiting for the replacement front fascia).
Then, a month later (this past Saturday 9/9). I took my family on a trip to a resort town around 120 miles away. This was going to be our first long distance trip in the R1S. Before this, I had never driven the car for more than 50 miles. During our 3 months of ownership, we had only put 1,500 miles on the car. And lo and behold, limp mode reared its head again.
We were already driving for around 20 mins without any error, issues. Then upon entering an on ramp to another highway, the R1S started telling me my doors were open, which they were not. And then it entered limp mode right as we were exiting the on ramp with on coming traffic. Luckily, I was able to get off the highway and entered a shopping complex, to again, restarting the car. Error went away. After I made it to my destination, I immediately notified Rivian cust. Support to log a ticket. The whole day I was pretty nervous that the problem would occur again on our way back. And my fear was confirmed, the same issue occur again. And this time, we were heading back. We had been driving for an hour without any errors, issues, all doors were closed. The car displayed the same message that doors were opened, and entered into limp mode. We were going down a mountain range when all the driver assistance became disabled. It was an ordeal to navigate an 8k lbs car from the left lane to a shoulder which limited brakes and power. And so again, a restart cleared out the issue, allowing us to drive back.
These events are extremely traumatizing and dangerous as they happen so frequently/ randomly and with incoming traffic. I often travel with my wife and toddler son. So the reliability of this car is becoming a big question mark for us.
Has anyone encountered similar issues such as ours? How should we proceed? The car is at Rivian SC again, and I don't know how long it will stay there or if they will ever be able to properly fix the car.
