Too complex to use while driving, or parking.

Also this is totally a generational thing. I can find everything on the Rivian because computer menus are something I'm familiar with. I don't have to read the directions usually because where I think it should be it is. The odometer isn't something I really need access but more than once a month I would like the clock and temperature displayed on the main dash screen though and I wouldn't want to deal with having only one center screen like Tesla.

All this is coming from someone 30 years your junior though. My dad is a few years younger than you and he wouldnt do well with a rivian so you're ahead of the curve for your generation.
Thanks for the support, it is a generational thing. My short comment is, the options and tech have out done the ease of using them for me.

I get your point. In Tesla, the screen displays 4 different mileage displays you can select from 5 total odometer settings. I usually have

- Current drive in minutes and KWh/mile
- Since last charge miles and kWh/mile
- Trip A miles and kWh/mile
- Trip B (renamed to Tire Rotation) miles and kWh/mi

The other odometer setting is the actual total miles.

Rivian's odometer setting needs you to goto settings>about>Trip A/B, so it's a pain to get to. Rivian can and should do better for basic vehicle information.
Well said! thanks for the comment, BTW, I still use miles, I still use inches, the future awaits! Adapt or die I guess. I must say, I love my R1T even brag about it too.

No, it doesn't and no it won't be, at least with respect to audio. Try listening to a podcast, park your truck, get out and walk away. When you return you will find you've missed a minute or two (that kept playing as you walked off, longer if you have proximity lock off). I've taken to pausing audio by pressing the left steering wheel button as part of my exit routine.
My mother's new X6 does this same thing. I'm not sure why but it drives me nuts hearing my music or my podcast playing as I walk away from the car, kind of disappointed to hear it's the same with the Rivian. Maybe that's something they could reduce with more precise positioning of the key fob?

That's the thing I think I'll miss from my older cars, as soon as I open the door the only thing I hear is silence haha.

As for the rest it would be nice to have a few buttons for things like the HVAC vs the aesthetic design choice of clean lines.
I like the idea of the user-assigned knobs! Definitely would like to have HVAC easily accessible like that

I forgot to whine about that myself, adjusting the direction of the fan air used to be a cinch, I could do it while staring at the road! As well flip over a cassette or change the 8 track tape. But now the features are more complex and the ease did not grow with the options.
I get where you are coming from, but even with the changes and challenges of learning a new way of interacting with my vehicle, I still feel for the most part these are improvements overall, and see it as my job to adapt to them. I knew long before it was time to put my $1000 deposit down that my R1T would have no dials or buttons and I still love it. The lack of them is so minor that it in no way takes away from my enjoyment of the truck.

Even if I personally would have done it differently, I still appreciate what Rivian and Tesla are doing by going with display only interfaces. Our Rivians are 800hp devices that can be updated and improved over the air now. I would not be surprised if one day they do add a way to allow changing the fan speed from the main screen. So instead of looking at it as something I want is missing, I see it more as something that is still a definite possibility.

Donald, GPS is not available everywhere, not everyone uses the urban location address, sometimes a rural location has things that are not recognized by google. Example, while driving you spot a tree of note, or a stranded bicyclist at a point of no reference to send help to or a tow truck to. Or dirt roads in mountains or actual range of the R1T consumed driving a given real distance in snow mode or such. Man does not live by google alone.
You can drop a pin or search by coordinates. Not to be pedantic but anywhere you can't do that a sat nav like Garmin in reach can. The tech is pretty low cost at this point and I consider it a must have for going off the beaten path these days. Just that little bit of extra peace of mind when you're out of cell range.

I really like to watch those I shouldnt be alive type shows and at least half of them could have been solved in hours with a Garmin in reach. I also think this forum probably skews towards the tech bro type guy so I think people like you comprise more of the population than people like me.

Yes! user assigned knobs or settings like od placement, or everything off when driver's seat empty or what ever.

I have wanted a GPS device, to get the elevations, and other things. I likely fear the learning curve. At my age, I have forgotten more than some. I'm not as open to new learning as I was 40 years ago when I was becoming the expert I was...

The fun is only beginning. My Tesla has had 2 “major“ updates since I had it that made huge changes to the UI causing me to relearn everything. Compare it to a phone or PC major OS update. I usually complain under my breath at first as I relearn things but for the most part I end up thinking it is better. ?

Yeah it's not too bad. No worse than a Rivian, probably easier than that honestly. If you're importing trail maps and things that can get tricky but just using the basic functionality it's pretty much plug and play. Everything is moving tech wise these days, even construction. Many big jobs are coordinated now and you lay out with a Total Station. Really precise but there's really a learning curve with that stuff. Totally different than getting the print and some string out with your apprentice.

I really only use it to remind myself to get the oil changed every 5000 miles. No need for that anymore!
That reminds me I just hit 10k I need to rotate my tires.

You conveniently left the rest of my quote out " You may still hear some noises briefly but they'll stop shortly. "

In your edge case I can see how that is annoying but like you already stated, it's a simple push on the left steering wheel to pause it.
Your exit routine on your ICE counterpart is put it in park and turn the key off/push the off button. Same number of steps here except you're replacing turning the key off by pausing your podcast.
Our exit routine has gotten much simpler. Park and walk away and listen to the chirp. No turning off or locking.

Funny, I was just flipping through Consumer Reports and they gave the R1S a terrible score, a 57, mostly for 'Useability'. There's definitely a learning curve but I think it's a much more pleasant driving experience. I think they gave the early Tesla's similar scores.

If I'm going somewhere and I don't actually know where it is, I put it in the navigation. I don' t need an odometer because I can see on the screen where on the map I am and where my destination is. Even without navigation, I still have a map and my location on it.

A lot of your arguments sound like the argument someone made about being drunk with a car. You might forget where you left the car, you might be too incapacitated to drive it, and you might not be able to remember where you live to drive home. But if you got drunk and had a horse, all you had to do was hold on and the horse knew how to get home.

But as a society, we went with cars instead of horses. Leaving things on is a feature, not a bug. If you don't like that, I'm sure someone will sell you a vehicle with a button.
