Not to be too much of a nanny, but he's really too small and young to be riding in the front seat. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends all kids ride in the rear until age 13. The airbag turning off for someone that size is a a feature, not a bug.
I get that, we had that fight for a long time, he just started sitting up front recently when the airbags turned on in our two other cars. He is now as tall as my wife and on pace to pass her up very shortly. Also, he has severe motion sickness and sitting in front helps, so we are a little tight on options.

My 120 lb wife has the same problem. It frequently turns off while she is sitting normally, but with weight shifted slightly to one side.

My daughter and wife both weigh 115-120 lbs. and the seat intermittently detects them. Most of the time, it does not detect them and the climate control features are then turned off for them. The safety component and the comfort component should not be dependent on each other. This seems like a bug, not a feature.
