This is great. I've replaced many parts on my older vehicles over the years with parts from junk yards and online. Maybe the availability of easy "DIY" repair parts will start bringing some of these outrageous repair costs down.

Like the song says. Parts are starting to show up on Ebay. I even saw the skateboard platform awhile back.

Great song reference for this thread ??

I’ve got multiple searches setup for eBay parts. Very little fun things, a few odds and ends that might be helpful in the future like ride height assemblies are available at a fair price. Most of what’s on there are full assemblies and panels for collision repair and at retail prices. Nothing useful for the shade tree consumer — yet!

Nice to see these parts finally becoming available.

But, if the parts are this “cheap”, how are dents causing $30k+ in damage?

Because as shown in the thread below... they are replacing the whole side of the vehicle to "repair" a small dent vs pulling it out with a stud gun for a couple of $K or even paying for PDR...

Does that look like a $41K dent? The Rivian repair costs are insane and will lead to super high insurance rates in the very near future if they don't get these "repairs" under control. Why can't that be pulled out as it would be on any ICE vehicle for a couple $K?

Agreed with you. But, I’m wondering who’s at fault here? Rivian? Insurance companies? Body shops? Can Rivian provide some guidance here to help curb these ridiculous repair costs?

I'm waiting to see if some aftermarket company might want to start making some sweet carbon fiber bits for the truck (full replacements, not stickers to add overtop of things).

I for one, think it'd be pretty awesome to swap the hood with a CF option.

That’s smart since the prices are only going up!

There's a salvage yard "near" me that gets the NHTSA crash vehicles, but I found their prices to be unacceptable. For example, they are selling the charging cable package for $549.99... it's $400 new from Rivian.

All three are to blame:

1) Rivian made a poor design decision making the whole side of a pickup truck one long piece of metal vs. a standard pickup that has a distinct bed and a distinct cab portion.
2) The insurance companies should get Adjuster feedback and refuse to pay to replace the whole side of a vehicle for a small dent in the rear quarter panel.
3) Body shops need to treat repairs in non-electrical related areas (like this dent in the rear quarter panel) the same as they would treat and repair a dent in an ICE vehicle.

Thanks for the sharing the reasoning. It’s a shame that the first can’t be really fixed, but the other points are still addressable.

That’s exactly right ?
