I am currently sitting in my other car, listening to Spotify via Bluetooth away from home. My wife just got into the R1 and started running errands.

My phone stops playing, and the Spotify app shows "Playing on R1S." I can switch back to my phone, but if she's changing to a song, it stops my podcast on my phone.

I assume this is a Spotify problem, and not a Rivian problem.

My question is, how do I "decouple" my phone and my R1, so I can listen to different things on both at the same time? I am new to Spotify, having switched from YouTube Music, when we got the Rivian.

I've had this issue as well. I hope someone has a solution. It's very frustrating.

It is a Spotify thing, but not an error. Spotify is designed to only play in one location at a time per account. So the "fix" would be you and your wife need separate Spotify accounts.

I was hoping that wasn't the case, but figured it would be.

So every time either of us drives in Rivian, we would need to sign out of the current account and log into ours? That seems ridiculous.

Oh man, I deal with this all the time. As others said - one stream per account for the basic account. For me, I'll be jamming to my tunes when my kids start playing THEIR music which initially starts playing on my device. We're always competing, and I generally lose that battle. Time to start making them pay for their own account. Damn 7 & 10 year olds are free loaders.

That's an option but not required. You could simply dedicate an account to the listening device instead of to the listener. That way each vehicle (and other streaming devices) would always connect to the same account. Since you're sharing an account today, you likely would not miss the ability to customize music per listener (parents and kids sharing an account, or in general whenever family members don't share the same musical tastes, would be a good example of when you might want an account per listener).

we haev family account with each family member having their own. I use mine in the Rivia, so for me its fortunately not much of an issue. I have noticed, though, the playlist in the rivian can continue indepedent of the phone's playlist, which is not the case when I connect in the other cars with android auto which essentially reflects what is playing on the phone. As a result, regardless of who is driving the truck, my phone/PC/sonos connection and music may run independently.

among the "right" answers for this, my preference would be to allow automatic switching of spotify accounts when you switch drivers on the rivian interface -- but indeed, this gets in my way when my wife is driving my truck

As mentioned, a basic Spotify account allows only one stream. A simple solution is Spotify Duo. Cheaper than a family account.

So then I create an account for just the Rivian, and can't carry over my place if I'm in the middle of a podcast, and lose all my saved likes, etc. Or I have to sign into my account every time I get in the car. Crazy.

Not liking Spotify at all after this, but Bluetooth quality is terrible compared to it in the R1. Amazon Music doesn't have all the podcasts I listen too.

For music I get the concern but what kind of podcast are you listening to that streaming over bluetooth isn't adequate?

As for playlists (which would include liked songs), you could sync those between accounts with tools such as soundiiz.

While there are options to make the best of a bad situation, I fully agree Rivian really needs to associate media accounts with driver profiles.

Get a family plan. You need more than one account to listen to more than one thing...

My wife enjoys messing with me when I'm listening to Spotify in our R1T. I'll be jamming along to AC/DC and she'll remotely switch it to a technical medical podcast
