Who else is very interested in the removable roof options that are supposed to be available in 2022? I had a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon before I got my model 3. My daughter and everyone in my family severely misses the open air feeling from the Jeep, but I love the EV.

I’m very curious to see exactly what the removable roof option is and cost of it.

Not interested at all.

I have a Jeep GC with a Panoramic Sun Roof, never even open the shade. I am certain I would never remove the roof on the R1S if it was available.

I was interested, but then was told the removable roof will be solid, and not glass. Not interested.

I'm definitely curious to see how they do it, but it's not something I would buy. As a Wrangler owner, I actually prefer removing doors & leaving the roof on for shade, unless I'm wheeling somewhere I might damage the roof. Granted, other geographies might have better open air weather than TX summers.

We were supposed to see this option before the end of this year...We don't even know what the colors look like yet for the regular version lol. I doubt we ever see a removable roof...however, I would like to see a render and cost so I know if its something I want to wait for vs. launch edition. Also, the other car I really love is the big Bronco which I also have a deposit on. So I'm with you on the open air thing but overall I'd imagine the Rivian to be the better daily driver but its also 30K more than the Bronco (4 door/badlands) I'm eyeing up.

I don’t plan on taking delivery until the removable roof option is available. I love the open air feeling. I have a glass roof in my Model 3 and have mixed feelings. It looks good, but it lets in way too much heat. I have a pano roof in my 2012 Model S and love it because it opens. I actually open it every whenever weather allows.

That said, I do need more information about it before making a final decision. As of now, though, I’m planning on purchasing an R1T with a removable roof, so these delays don’t bother me at all. More time to invest and save.

I’m hoping a later produced model will also have more manufacturing kinks worked out, but I could also be left with a buggy early model removable roof.

I prefer the fixed glass roof vs. removable.

No, thank you.

Where we go off-road it tends to be dusty so we keep our vehicle closed up and HVAC recirculate setting on. It also tends to be bumpy to very bumpy and I don’t want to hear the inevitable creaks, squeaks, or pops from the weatherstripping, surfaces, and latches.

For on-road use, having to manually remove, stow, and reinstall panels isn’t part of a near-luxury or luxury experience for me. I think if there was an upgrade to panoramic power-opening glass roof that would be more in keeping with my perception of the positioning of Rivian.

edit: added a missing word

A powered panoramic moonroof would be the better option, IMO. It’s one of the big advantages the F150 Lightning has over Rivian.

I'm just the opposite. I'd only be interested in a removable roof if it was all metal. And I'd never take it off.

I just don't get the appeal of the all glass roof. If I could delete it for credit I would do so in a heart beat. I don't like paying for a "feature" that I don't want.

It might very well be cheaper overall to do glass vs. metal, especially for a fixed glass roof (as opposed to an opening one). The large opening makes manufacturing easier, and the glass can be the last thing installed. A metal roof would require welding that's much harder.

Removable glass roof = heavy.
Any removable roof = inevitability of leaks.

I’d pass.

Everyone has very good points about the potential roof options. For me it really depends how Rivian executes this option on if I’d want it or not. I’m guessing it would be something like the bronco with removable composite roof sections, but we will have to wait and see if that’s correct. I’m a late reservation holder in Ohio, so I’m guessing nothing is coming my way anytime soon……time to wait and see how it goes I guess.

A quality sunroof is one of the most important factors for our family. We were initially excited by the solid glass roof on our Tesla Model Y, but soon found that it actually sucks quite hard. Rather than add sunlight to the cabin, Tesla adds super dark tint so they don't need a sunshade. You're basically left with the worst of all worlds solution. Dark cabin even on sunny days, no open air motoring, maximum sound reflection, maximum solar gain. We drove pretty much every SUV under 60 grand before getting the Tesla and the Tiguan's panoramic roof was amazing. Quiet and bright when closed with a massive opening that felt like you were in a Jeep when it's open, plus a powered shade.

We were also planning to hold off for the removable roof, unlike some in this thread that HATE HATE HATE sunroofs and I'm sure are super fun at parties. I guess I'd have to think long and hard about if driving around with a multi-piece, Bronco-esque solid plastic roof 90% of the time would be worth the topless 10%. I agree that Ford's operable panoramic unit will likely be best in class.

I had a 2007 Corvette with the dual roof panel (transparent and body color) option. The transparent roof panel was some kind of plastic to keep the weight manageable and was what I used in the winter. I really liked it but I was always paranoid about scratching it. It wasn’t too heavy but it was a bit awkward and it acted like a sail if you were removing, carrying, or installing when wind speed picked up.

The removable roof panel on my car never leaked, but it creaked going over speed bumps or crossing into and out of driveways. I even kept the weatherstripping coated in special grease to address the creaking per GM, but all that did was get grease stains on shirts when the wind suddenly moved the panel when I was handling it. It still creaked.
