Rivian welcomes some early preorder holders at the plant in Normal, IL

The test drive program begins in september. They’ll need cars for that.

It seems that would the kind of information they would have on their website.

I am sure their vehicles will be safe. Looking forward to September and delivery of the first production vehicles to customers.

I'll take the dark blue one vs. the lighter one...oh wait...lol.

…so about that blue in these photos. I know Rivian Blue can look a little different in various lighting but the darker blue in the one picture is waaaay darker than I thought it could be. I can’t imagine they would have made a darker one (and let us see it before LG) and I am just thinking this is a camera thing. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Don’t want to upset anybody, but being a healthcare worker, I’m seeing some serious trends right now that remind me of the time before lockdown last fall. I have a bad feeling we will see some serious shutdowns again. Sounds like it’s already happening overseas where there are huge outbreaks. We are going to have a long wait yet.

You could be right. Just a guess though, but I find it doubtful Texas would shut down again, unless vaccinated people start dying in large numbers, from the Delta, or other variant of COVID. As of now, it appears to be a bigger problem amongst the unvaccinated, as far as severe reactions. However, I can see Illinois shutting down, so that could very well affect Rivian.

That alone should give Rivian concern as to where to build their next manufacturing facility. I wonder if Rivian has a policy requiring their employees to be vaccinated? Possibly this could avoid a shutdown in their state, if a shutdown were to come about. I would hope their state would allow exemptions as such.

Depending on which states the Ford factories are located in, some of their factories could remain open and possibly start production with their EV Lightning truck, which wouldn't be good news for Rivian either. I have an early reservation in both and will take the first available, or both, but definitely the first available.

it’s not even just America. Texas will probably stay open. However chips and other things come from overseas where they have a different view of the pandemic. The whole supply chain will get a jolt once again. So frustrating. Was hoping to get a new EV when my son turns 16 in early 2023. I have my doubts that will happen

Hopefully, America will get in gear and start producing the necessary supplies, that has been coming from overseas. Could be a wake-up call.....again.

My old colleague, Joe, a hardware engineer, used to frequently say that the difference between hardware and software was that you could change hardware. If you are, or have ever been, in the biz you will know why that always got a laugh - well, from the other hardware engineers anyway.

.....the infrastructure does not exist in North America to produce many microchips and the like. It would take years to build.

I know zero about microchips, or what is necessary to start production. If it takes years, perhaps Americans need to get started building the necessary infrastructure now, or be at the mercy of other countries.....when you place all your dependency on others, there's a good chance, at some point, you'll be disappointed.

Anyway, it’s good that rivian is making progress again.
Hopefully production keeps ramping up.

Any chance the two you know were able to confirm if there was a glove box? Or if the infotainment worked? In all seriousness, did they happen to have any comments on space, especially the 3rd row of an R1S?

No glove box. They really liked the infotainment center, and they alone drove the R1T's. Spoke with my friend yesterday for about 45 minutes and all I can say is - we're going to be super happy with the finished project and the ride and drive events!!
