Hey All,

Picked up my 2023 R1S Quad from the El Segundo CA service center last Thursday. It was a shop order built in 9/23. When picking it up it seemed to have some sap on the rear passenger quarter panel and door. I thought, oh well I’ll just get it detailed”.

Come to find out, when speaking with 2 reputable auto detailers, the entire rear quarter panel and rear door have been repainted and the sap is actually overspray. There are also swirls, small dimples, and fish eyes in the paint.

I’m beyond disappointed with this finding. I am going to contact customer service but I don’t feel there would be an adequate resolution. Service appointment scheduled in Costa Mesa but I don’t really want them painting it again…

Has anyone had to deal with this?

Update(1/5): Contacted CS and was notified that even thought its day 8, since I reached out to the Guide(with no response) and Service before 7 days, and given it was over the New Years holiday which some services were down that I am eligible for a buy back and I guess I will try my luck again. Will keep the thread updated in case anyone encounters a similar situation.

I wouldn't be happy with this either. Are they sure it was repainted? If it was resprayed you should see much thicker on paint gauge. It's very possible you could have some factory paint defects...but the detailers probably know what they are looking at.

Have you had it less than 7 days? Return it.

Too bad you didn't notice this before the 7 day return. Sad that they still have the same paint issues on some vehicles as they did on my 1500 vin I returned for striping in LA Silver, which also had buff marks, fisheyes, etc. The 3600 vin I have now has areas of over buffing that I've just lived with.

I have. I am calling CS today but was unsure what others have witnessed. What the mileage limit on return/exchange? I had to drive 200 miles back home and the vehicle has around 300 now.

7 days or 1000 miles...whichever comes first.

New vehicles get damaged in transit (or on the dealer lot) and repaired before sale all the time. The issue here seems to be the quality of the repair. I had a similar situation with the purchase of a 2004 BMW. The driver's door had been repainted (before the car arrived at my dealership, they had the car shipped up from a dealership in Austin and clearly didn't have time to do any repairs). Unfortunately the original repair only painted the door and did not blend into adjacent panels which made the very slight color mismatch stand out, especially in bright sunlight. My dealership had the door repainted again with proper blending and I was 100% happy with the final results until I finally sold that car in 2019.

Today would be day 8, no? You said you picked it up Thursday last week.
Dammit, Yep I picked up last Friday. I'm gonna call anyway. I was asking my guide about this since Tuesday and got crickets

14 hours prior to my 12/30 delivery appt. I found out from the delivery service center that my vehicle had sustained paint/body damage during transport. After back and forth emails, phone conversations, option discussions and photos showing me the damage (thumbnail-size chip in paint on top edge of gear tunnel door… PROBABLY without any sheet metal dent) I went ahead and accepted delivery as scheduled, and am now waiting (longer than expected... what a shock!) for an appt. with the Service Center to get the issue resolved. Assumption is that the gear tunnel door will have to be repainted and re-PPF'ed... and I am VERY hopeful for a VERY good paint match (or I will become a nightmare customer!). As electruck said, it does happen. Not sure if it is better to know about the damage and that your vehicle had work done on it (now I will ALWAYS notice that spot. no matter what they do) or to be blissfully unaware. I totally understand how you feel, and hope you get whatever resolution you think is fair. Regardless, not a fun way to start a new relationship with your expensive new vehicle.

Yeah I agree things happen and I am sure we have all had vehicles which were repaired at some point without our knowledge. My issue is the extent of the damage/repair. I wish it was more contained to a single area. The entire rear quarter panel and rear door with overspray reaching the front passenger quarter panel (which has front paint protection), trim, and roof. That said, if I were allowed to choose my own paint shop it would be a different story but trusting them to get all of this right is a hard choice for me to make.

I had my hood hinges replaced, and after replacing my SC sent it to a body shop for paint. I don't think Rivian SC's do any paint on-site.
