Looking into used R1T's and would like to know what to look for from people who have bought used. Are there any specific things to look for? Any issues buying used from a new car dealer? Does anyone have experience with getting a used Rivian checked out before purchase?

Bought mine used - got it transferred over to me within a week or so after purchase. No issues at all since, very happy I ended up pulling the trigger.
Same. Bought a 2023 T from a dealer in Texas. FG/OC w 3k miles back in September for 79k with no dealer fees and $500 ship it to South Florida. They bought my trade-in. Glad I went dealer as private parties were being squirrelly and unreliable.

Never saw it before it arrived and had never driven one before. I took a lot of comfort in the manufacturer warranty staying with the car. I also figured even with a brand new purchase there is an elevated risk of needing service compared to a legacy auto maker. So I viewed buying new vs used as a wash as to risks. I think one could argue that maybe used would need less attention given prior owner may have gotten some of the early gremlins taken care of.

It did arrive with a window calibration issue which I believe developed somewhere in transit. Anyhow easy fix.

I did specifically want the quad motor for the extra power (which is functionally silly but I still like having) and the longer quad warranty. At that time new dual motors were coming out but warranty was a touch shorter, I liked the Bosch name/history (although the Enduro motors seem quite popular around here and I'd probably be indifferent today)

I cancelled my quad reservation (post price adjustment) with Rivian upon finding the used one. I figured I still had 98% of the mileage warranty and 97% of the time warranty.

I was willing to buy private party but also did take some comfort in having recourse against a bonafide dealer (although I didn't need it).

I had them take a few extra pictures, positively confirm on their honor (ha) that there were no blemishes, noises, etc....there was some TX rule that buyer needed to purchase some $45 inspection which was done. All I really found out there was tire depth, lack of warning lights, And than it seems to drive fine. I don't think the shop really knew what to look for in an electric truck (and neither would I).

You should figure out how the tires are holding up. They can get worn down remarkably fast so don't assume low mileage means good tires.

Long story short, I think I ended up with pre price hike pricing even though I only decided to buy in September. At the time I felt like my purchase was a very good price.
I do sometimes looks look at used listing and bet you could do a couple thousand better than me now.

Thanks for the intel. It’s hard to know what to look for and also concerned about a private party sale. There are a few listed at new car dealers in the Northeast that I might consider. I’m assuming that because they are not Rivian they really have limited knowledge of the truck in the first place and I’d be relying on the remainder of warranty anyway.

Yeah I very quickly arrived at that conclusion....It's all about the warranty.

The typical stuff car history report like Carfax. Checking whether it was owned by a business/fleet or an individual. Looking the vehicle over. And also big one is the check the service history to see how many times it's been to the service center and what was done.

We're too early in the game to worry about battery health and depending on the configuration there is a 150,000 to 175,000 mi battery warranty best in the industry as far as I know.

I agree, well said, I paid $82K last year in Jan. 12K miles on R1T, Adventure Pkg. Quad big Battery, top everything. The title transfer at Rivian was a bit slow, but till I got it I had an "Added Driver" assignment by the seller so I could drive the truck. I had the sellers phone # with agreement he hold my hand if issues happened. The title he had was not clear, he had to pay off and then get it to me. I had to trust him.

As for you personally knowing if the truck was in good shape, I suggest a full education of how the entire firmware operates first. Go over the system fully yourself.

FWIW- I have been told (by my insurance broker) it can take up to 6 months or even longer in some cases for damage to show up on Carfax. So, just seeing a clean Carfax doesn't guarantee anything unfortunately.

My Tesla was fixed at a certified shop and apparently wasn't reported to Carfax, pulled if when the dealer I traded into listed it for sale and was clean

Yeah, apparently it's up to the body shop to file with Carfax which conveniently Carfax fails to mention in their ads. Body shop never files, vehicle has no Carfax record.
