I find it incredibly satisfying that the local tv station cared enough to air the video and doubly impressive that that a neighboring PD cared enough to ID the suspect and follow up

Here in San Francisco broken windows are so commonplace that investigative follow up and prosecution is nonexistent. Mark Rober did a whole series of YouTube videos with bait cars and glitter bombs. The final installment has 21M views. But, zero mention of prosecution of the criminals.

I'm trying to figure out who the real thief is here.

The one who broke into your car or Rivian with how expensive it is to fix.

It's as if Rivian doesn't really understand who their customer base is.

The R1S is extremely popular among families for obvious reasons. I imagine most families are like the one I grew up in and that meant things happened. Windows got smashed due to errant baseballs, and oops moments.

Things happen and it shouldn't cost nearly 5% of the vehicle price to fix a window.
Can you imagine how much it will cost to replace a failed drive motor or inverter out of warranty?

I saw this on the news the other night. Really sucks that scum people rob you. Really sucks a $4k bill to fix the problem. Can’t imagine that story made people more interested in buying a Rivian.

My kids showed me this. In fact: in his always-kind way, Mark directly put a bullseye over the critical issue (for SF): there's a fencing operation the size of a regular store!, right on the street in plan view, that all the thieves go to to immediately dump the merchandise. One place. And it remains completely open. All the SF gov. needs to do is shut down that operation, and thieves will have little market for most of the stuff they steal. Break-ins will still occur in SF -- lots of issues there -- but the rate would definitely drop with fencing interception, in lieu of tracking down each and every thief.

On the one hand, this constant publicity on egregious repair costs is just going to feed the EV-nay sayers.

On the other hand, this constant publicity on EV-vandalizers getting caught is discouraging future vandalizers.

I for myself have at least 4 videos of male reproductive organs making friends with my R1T in the form of urination. Unfortunately, the police don’t care about this (for good reasons as they’re too busy).

Sometimes I think ignorance is bliss. I’m a sure my X7 gets pissed on all the time but I don’t know because it doesn’t have cameras.

Safelight was $1083 for window repair but Rivian recommends a Rivian authorized dealer / repair center
The seals are 1 time use
Paint damage (belt buckle/zipper as he dove in)
Trim pieces

If insurance wasn't paying the 4K, I would have tried to replace the glass myself. Oh wait, Rivian wont sell us parts. $4000 to replace a $275 glass is outrageous. Why would they replace the $777 door panel? Was it damaged?

Edit:I can learn how to do it and do it in 15 hours. It should not be more than a 2 hour job.

Rivian is insane with their costs and time estimates... look at the worksheet: 30 min to remove and reinstall the rear floor mat? At $125/hr.. that 2 min job cost you $62.50! Clean up broken glass.. 1 full hour. Looks like most of their labor times are just as bloated too.

Just out of principle I wouldn't have Rivian repair it, bring it to Safelite.

Reinforces my decision that I will not be owing this vehicle out of warranty.
Repair costs are sky high in many places where immigrants can no longer hold jobs for fear of legal action or police involvement.

Typically car repair is one of the many jobs immigrants have held but the recent political situation cracking down on immigration has made finding and keeping employees willing to do these manual labor jobs difficult. as a result employee wages have risen dramatically the past few years And the costs directly passed on to consumers. Since car repair techs are typically paid by turning book hours, the book hours have risen as have the actual rate per hour. Ask me how I know.

I get that, but that doesn't give Rivian a free pass to commit highway robbery.. I mean c'mon... 30 min to remove and replace the rear floor mats? How long does it take you to do that job.. 2 min maybe. 1 hour to remove and replace the front trunk tub.. there are YouTube video's showing how to do it and the whole procedure is only 5 min long. Rivian's whole $4K invoice is padded to the point of being out of touch with reality. At these kinds of costs.. how will anyone be able to afford one of these vehicles out of warranty?

Good day!

My family and I love our R1S (Mongo). As I mentioned previously, it has replaced our Defender 110 Trek Edition. We have been in sand dunes, mud bogs, climbed rocks and roots, and even pulled out a Lexus ES350 out of a cornfield covered in 10” of snow.

My wife and load up 3 children, a jogging stroller, 2 children’s bikes (hitch) and the dogs into the R1S and head out to a local trail. The kids and Doberman ride+run up ahead and hit the single track, while my wife and I run with the stroller and pitbull along the crushed gravel.

After about 60 minutes we come back to find the rear passenger driver’s side window smashed in. Immediately, we are hit with disbelief. I jump in the car and review the gear guard video; and there he is (pictured). Very smooth operator, pulled up next to the R1S, walked up to the rear passenger window, pressed on the bottom portion of the window with a screwdriver, and fractured the glass, without setting off the alarm. He pushed the remainder of the glass in and then jumped into the car, only to emerge with nothing! (Bc living in Philadelphia suburbs we know never to leave anything out). He walked off, and we are now left with approx a $4000 bill! While waiting for parts, saran/plastic wrap, clear tape, gorilla tape layered on (not on paint).

Armed with this precious data, I reached out to all the local news stations! 6ABC picked it up, interviewed me, broadcast it, and within 24 hours a neighboring districts police officer reached out telling me he think he knows the culprit! Apparently the individual is already standing trial this summer for similar break-ins a few miles away. Additionally, in 2018 6ABC did a story about the guy, as he was compulsively breaking into vehicles in the same area while pretending to operate a drone (story below).

What the police now have is actual video of the suspect! Since he was notorious in the area, hopefully things will settle out a bit, and 1 less person is discouraged from vandalism.

Concerns:
1) why did the alarm not go off when he broke the window? Shouldn’t there be some sensors to detect this?

Thanks!

Sorry to hear this, really sucks that this is driving insurance rates through the roof and hitting victims hard who don't have comprehensive coverage.

I had to replace the tailight cover area i broke... Did not file the claim, as quote on repair was $2300. plus... Actual repair cost, including all the cameras re-calibrated, was $1600.+, and I saved my "accident forgiveness" for a bigger issue. Repairs are pricey on these vehicles. Its a fact. But it won't always be... we're the Pioneers, sent ahead to pave the trail... At my age, it's paving is long overdue. Watch the documentary Whatever happened to the Electric car?" You'll see the NUMBER 1 reason this is so pricey, greed in the fossil fuels industry wants these to fail... again... It's a scary and sad review on power... wish everyone had seen it... Good luck to you going forward, it's not easy being a Pioneer, but it comes with great satisfaction as others follow behind you.
Wow, thanks for sharing!
I agree with you, it will not be without turbulence, but I am enjoying the journey. I’m glad there are individuals with the gall to challenge the fossil fuel industry.

If this is in suburban Chester county then some punishment, if it is Philadelphia then the DA there will likely not press charges!
The Montgomery County police officer called Philadelphia to follow up on the DC number. He told me that they did not even file a police report yet! Meanwhile, Montgomery county is trying to prosecute this guy for earlier crimes.
You are right Philadelphia county is a pretty backwards place right now. Maybe the new mayor will make a difference.

They recommend Rivian authorized dealers, as they are trained far more in the areas of all the fancy gadgets and cameras we love to have on our Rivians... They can't guarantee other peoples work, if they were not trained on the new technology. Makes sense. It is what it is for now. It will get better. And less costly, like everything else in tie. Supply & demand drive a lot of these costs up, plus training and manufacturing time... dealing with the weather alone, for parts and deliveries drive up prices... Gramma is simply going to be more careful in reverse... not my first time backing into something, just the most costly! Happy adventures Rivian family!
Couldn’t agree with you more. A friend with an R1S went to get his wrapped, and they failed to reconnect some of the sensors. He had to send the car back to Rivian to have it properly reconnected.
When he and I tried to source the parts and labor for cheaper, The mechanic said Rivian will not send him the window because he is not authorized to work on the car.
