Anyone waiting for Q2 refresh to purchase?

Here is my thoughts, no major updates will happen until the actual launch of the R2 in 2026. It makes no sense to make major architecture changes unless it improves profitability, and we know they said margin will increase by 35% with the Q2 updates. They did not say anything about new features...

You could possibly have the introduction of a QMP but other than NACS I don't see them making any change of substance.

I think with the R2 announcement they will show 800v and LFP tech in the lower trim models. 800v will be applied to all cars and LFP will be the standard pack.

800v is not a bad feature to wait for. I'll wait at least until the R2 announcement and see how things look.

Tough call. I’m impatient, so in your shoes I could definitely see myself buying now rather than later. But I also hate getting a car right when a refresh happens, so it would tempt me greatly to wait.

But considering that IF they announce a refresh, said refresh will be months away from production and then also delivery, it’s now or probably at least a half-year wait. In that sitch, I’m probably buying versus waiting.

Agreed and things the OP wants like valet mode will come this year regardless of when purchased.

After many months of waiting I recently got contacted that I could place an order. There's all these rumors about the Q2 refresh. After waiting for more than a year, I can sure wait a few more months. Now... Rivian (to the best of my knowledge), has only announced cost saving measures for Q2. If it's only that... there's no real point in waiting from my perspective... I keep thinking that they'll do more than just cost saving changes though..

I intend to keep the Rivian for many years. I have FOMO now, but I rather have it now than for years to come when I see updated Rivians.

Anyway, I'm torn. Any thoughts?

From everything I read and talked with a service guide, it is mainly going to be a visual refresh more than anything. The guide did say they are going from 850ho to 1200hp (which I would take with a grain of salt). I don't think there will be a lot of (if any) visual changes with the REFRESH.

I hear you on this being an 100K vehicle. I've had a Tesla M3 but never a 100K vehicle. For that amount of money, I'm not looking to make compromises...

FWIW......there are very few wrong things with the R1T/S I feel.

1, The wireless charging can be improved, but I just plug a cable in and charge.
2. CP or AA would be a nice addition and I feel that will be coming soon (within a year).....just my thought.
3. Sound system could have a little more "oomph", but it isn't that bad.

I am 100% satisfied with our R1T.

Too early to say whether the updates are meaningful or not.

Since they’re changing the underlying tech architecture, I think there will eventually be a point where vehicles before the update stop being supported with software updates. This would still be multiple years out though.

I’d say to get one when you’re truly ready for a new car and don’t overthink it.

There will always be a new update around the corner. If you wait halfway through this year you’ll then start questioning whether you should wait for the NACS changeover.

If you wait for the NACS changeover, you’ll then question whether you should wait for whatever new tech they’re working on.

I’m normally a fan of holding onto vehicles for ~10 years, but the pace that EV’s are changing have me questioning that. The tech and capabilities are just changing so fast (by automotive standards). So just buy a new car when you’re ready for a new car. Don’t rush it, but don’t wait forever either.

I plan on having the R1S for a long time. I've had my H2 for 14yrs. I'm not concerned about the NACS changeover, my plan has always been to get Tesla's Universal Charger for home. I work in IT, so software updates don't bother me. Wireless charger isn't a showstopper either, just want to give Rivian some time to address it(if they even intend to do so). Also hoping interest rates will go down, but unfortunately that's beyond Rivian's control Nevertheless, barring anything drastic, I'll be rolling my R1S through the streets long before the year ends.

I just don't believe that kind of change is happening in a midyear refresh.

The refresh in the next couple of months is confirmed to be a new network architecture that would likely have little to no direct effect on the user. But, if they're shutting down the line to swap in some thing, I'm sure they're going to try to address as many warranty related issues as possible. I plan on keeping mine for a few to 10 years. So, to me, that's enough for me to wait.

It was also mentioned that they'll have a new battery pack design. Considering that they just launched the Standard and Standard+ batteries, I wonder if that's already happened, or if they'll still be bringing in a redesign during the line shutdown.

Also, later in the year is when they're rumored to launch the 1100 hp monster. That's tempting as well.

Keep in mind that they’d be insane to announce revolutionary changes to come in future months. They would freeze all current sales. More than likely they’ll announce a new edition with improvements, such as an off-road warrior edition with winch, trail lights, rear hooks, and maybe wheel locks, etc.

Improvements in the standard R1 will not be announced until they are immediately available. If the shut down is summer it’ll be a while to come, if at all.

I’d probably wait until March because why not, but you’d probably end up with the same R1 then as now.

Also keep in mind that certain things are currently free, like data. Very soon they will start charging for lots of things including special software updates, data, and maybe certain apps (Netflix etc). So if you buy soon you’ll get that for free longer.

This too! Just like they did with the batteries. It doesn't make sense for them to announce an update before it's available. They still need all the current sales they can get.

I’m in a similar situation I had 2 bad delivery experiences with Rivian here in Miami. I’m not in a hurry and hoping they get their act together. I’m waiting for earnings and the R2 reveal to see if this company has a real shot. If they fail on R2 reveal they’re going to be in a bad spot.

No problem waiting while they work out kinks and improve their service. Hopefully they get better folks into the miami service center.

I'm in the same boat. I'm also waiting for the automatic tonneau cover to be put back into the configurator/get some reviews before deciding between another R1T or R1S.

My biggest concern is charging, as the current setup is a bit of a downside given how much I travel each year. Even if they don't go with 800v, I'd likely still get one, but I know I'll kick myself very hard if I bought an R1 in the next 2-3 months, just before some big QOL updates.
