I realized that the speedometer on my newly purchased R1S dual motor with 21" tires is not accurate. It is under by roughly 2mph when driving around 40mph and is probably slightly more at 65mph. Is there a way to adjust the speedometer to be more accurate? My Toyota Prius was doing the same but my model 3 is pretty much spot on. Is this true of all Rivians, or does mine need adjustment? Thanks!

No. This is 100% intentional and for regulatory purposes.

I believe this is true of almost all vehicles. I assumed a liability thing.

Though my winter tires are slightly larger, which brought my speedo to almost perfectly accurate!

I thought that could be the case, but why Tesla is able to get away with it and provide a spot on value?

I mean I agree it's intentional but many vehicles have accurate speedo's so not sure why it would be regulatory.

That is their choice to be that close. Most manufacturers add in a little buffer. As it is mandated to not be under, most go over.

The regulations say they can't be under (i.e. show 65 when actually doing 66) so many manufacturers add in a buffer to ensure compliance.

My Rivian at 70mph reports 68mph but at lower speeds like 55mph it’s accurate. I’m cool with it. My jeep 4xe is the same

Unless GPS based (the Rivian isn't one), no car has an accurate speedo. None. All manufacturers build in a margin of conservative error, for safety. Even civilian GPS is not as pin-point accurate as military GPS.

If you have range anxiety, this margin of error is actually good. Because your actual range could be larger than estimated range; leaving you with more reserve than expected upon arrival.

Go 2 mph faster to account for the difference.

My Tesla Model S is off by almost the same as my R1S.

1 mph 40-65, under 2 mph over 65. I use a GPS speed app on the phone to check.
