Great to hear that there‘s some review from professionals. ? Trauma surgeon here… keep asking how I can hook up my lights and sirens for my R1S (no definitive answer yet), in addition to asking safety/impact issues from First Responder perspective given my role and injuries we may see/changes in extraction, etc.

Yet another indicator of sensible choices…the fact that they’re asking professionals for review is reassuring of the path and outcomes. Thank you for your thoughtful review - we’re grateful you’re taking the time.

Simple answer is most likely that the typical 12V battery failure/replacement cycle occurs outside of warranty. Why would they add the cost?

With Rivian's 5 year/60k mile comprehensive warranty, 5 years is about where many 12 volt lead acid batteries begin to fail. Have seen this in Prius and Volt I have owned, failing with no warning, red "triangle of death", and those were out of warranty, as you said. Maybe Rivian has thought of something to make the 12 volt batteries last longer, or using lithium ion 12 volt batteries, otherwise, they will be doing quite a few replacements under warranty, not good for the bottom line. Maybe there is a good reason not to use lithium ion? Surely, someone at Rivian has thought about this. But again, I would have thought they would have included a switchable camera based rear view mirror system like in my BoltEV, and a heat pump cabin warming system to conserve battery/range in winter as well.

Unfortunately I didn't get very many questions answered in Austin... It was really an event for lawmakers at the Capitol. So I was there kind of crashing the party and trying to stay out of the way. It also seems like that was an eternity ago... even though it was just late April. The extent of the battery question was that there was one and it was easily accessible .

I'm guessing your memories of that event are pretty special and they're likely still front and center in your memory bank, yes? I also remember you saying you had a nice lunch with your oldest (?) daughter and that just made the day even better.

We all need more days like those. I remember thinking how cool that one must have been for you.

As a firefighter and Day 1 Pre-order holder for both the R1T and R1S, I feel very honored and privileged to be asked to review and comment on the R1T First Responders Guide, which I just received today.

We come across every vehicle under the sun, each with different characteristics, equipment, and dangers, so these guides play a vital role in how we approach each scenario.

Yes - and she went down to see the R1T with me because her dorm was just a couple of blocks from the Capitol... It was a great day. To think she has been home for the summer and now moved back into her dorm room for a couple of weeks now.... The time sure is flying by.

One point about heat pumps, where I live they are not effective much of the winter. They’re really only good to -25c.

Wow, it has flown by! I can't believe school is back in for many and the first kickoff is right around the corner. Luckily, I don't feel like I'm getting any older. I'm sure as heck not acting any older!
