TL;DR: Locked in stealth PPF R1S only to have Rivian cancel on their end and now there aren't any more of those vehicles available.

Long story: I'm extremely frustrated with Rivian and at the edge of just cancelling my pre-order altogether. The reason that I'm more irritated with this situation is that I had locked in one of the R1S vehicles with stealth PPF included...which are no longer available. I had locked in my configuration and even had the step and VIN available when logging into my account. Then a couple hours later, the confirguration still showed, but the steps and VIN weren't in the menu anymore. I got contacted by the guide and they said that the vehicle was not road worthy and was no longer available. Despite attempts to get ahold of my guide via phone, it's been basically impossible. I did get a follow up call from someone that was working to get me linked with another vehicle...but there aren't anymore available with stealth PPF. So I told him that I wasn't interested in anything else at this time. I was mainly waiting for a dual motor Standard+ after the retooling...but the lease deal and free stealth PPF put me over the edge to pull the trigger.

So...the next morning I get another email from Rivian informing me that my pre-order was confirmed (again). The vehicle matched my choice before with the exception of the wheels...which I felt could be resolved by the guide. I had thought that someone at Rivian had found a close match and was going to make good on my previous locked in config. Again, I was able to see the VIN and the steps. And again, a couple hours later the steps and the VIN were gone from my account.

After multiple attempts to get the guide or the guide lead to contact me via phone to understand what was going on, I got another call from the same person at Rivian stating that they had heard that I was now interested in a vehicle without the stealth PPF. The communication with customers and internally to each other is absolutely abysmal. I told him that "No...I was trying to figure out what was going on with the 2nd R1S that was locked in and then gone." He said there is some glitch that their engineering team is working on and that all the R1S vehicles with free stealth PPF are gone and there aren't any more expected to be available. They won't honor my locked in configuration...which is really poor form.

I suspect that either multiple people had locked in the same vehicle at the same time which caused an issue in their system...or it was locked to me but there were some internal shenanigans going on where someone at Rivian pulled my vehicle for someone else. I think the "road worthy" excuse is untrue.

Either way, I'm this close to just cancelling. Given this experience, I wouldn't be surprised (or upset) if they are defunct in a year.

One thing the guide did state is that the stealth PPF will be an option on new vehicles (for $5000) after the factory is back up and running. This might be common knowledge but wasn't to me.

That sucks to hear, I've had a disappointing situation but at least Rivian has honored their original lease deal (2023) with a newer model year vehicle (2024). I had to speak with quite a few people, they missed a few phone calls, wouldn't hear back from them for 2 days. Overall terrible purchasing experience, but the local service center contact and sales contact have helped to fix the issue. The guide(s) and original sales person have done a terrible job.

My issues started back on March 26, but at least with this vehicle I was able to select one from the shop with options I wanted vs what they had only in the shop. Originally it was a 2023 for the nice lease deal (already sent the due at signing, signed the lease contract, etc. was 24 hours before delivery 3 times before they realized their mistake) , but because of their issue they gave me same/similar terms on a 2024. At least that is what they're saying, still waiting on paperwork.

I know they're a new company, but this process shouldn't be this bad. Even with Tesla during the model 3 craze, it was a way better experience and I'd say contact/response time was better with Tesla (24 hours vs 48).

Sorry for the misadventures u are having. 3rd time is the charm? Email and escalate to the customer engagement lead, Tony Caravano. If u google u can see his Rivian email address. Even if it is his team that responds, better chance to get traction.

It is a fun vehicle and driving it has never gotten old.

Sounds like an all around bummer, sorry you're going through it. If I'm understanding correctly, Rivian won't honor the stealth PPF from the factory because they no longer offer it (?) - would they sell you your config and cover the cost of a 3rd party PPF? How contractually binding is pre-order confirmation?

Sorry you have had hassle but you have 2020 pricing and then on top a further offer. Cancel your order if you want - saves Rivian a sure loss on your vehicle.

Correct, they won’t honor the stealth PPF config.

Did you ask them to comp you a third party PPF? Better quality though more expensive - but these guys want to move vehicles.

They are not that desperate to sell their fine vehicles. Much wants more with some people - 2020 pricing, cheap tonneau cover and now free PPF.

Regrettably you are not alone. I have had a similar situation two times now. The latest occurred this week when they claimed my vehicle was ready to be delivered and then when I asked them if they had found any issues with the vehicle, they told me that there were some paint defects but that I wouldn’t be bothered by them. When I asked them to send me photos it was clear that the vehicle should never have left the plant in Illinois or the Miami Service Center. Nonetheless, Rivian has been willing to step up to the plate and do the right thing, but it has been a four month hassle, the silver lining of this is that, I now intend to buy the refreshed R1S and I hope that I will be satisfied with the vehicle and that Rivian will survive. They have a great product but their Customer Service and delivery system needs improvement. I personally think that you might be better off just waiting for the refreshed R1S. I have also asked my Guide and the team leader of my delivery team about the changes that are going to occur in the refreshed, R1S and they claim that they have no information whatsoever. Whether this is true or not, doesn’t matter because they would be stupid to release anything at this point until they blow out the balance of the existing inventory. Good luck with your decision.
