I posted last week about an upcoming trip from Southwest Florida to NJ and received many helpful responses. Since then, I've been planning and plotting and noticed one of the charging stops on Navigation is a TESLA station in GA. In navigation setup, I included all of the networks (EVGo, Electrify America, etc) except Tesla since I don't yet have the necessary adapter. So I'm a little confused why a Tesla station was included. But I'm also new to EVs and charging on road trips, only having my RIS since Jan 30th.

When I tapped on details about the Tesla stop, directions indicate to "unlock the CCS plug or use your adapter." Again, I don't have an adapter and really don't want to buy one since Rivian will be shipping them out to owners in coming months. Will I be able to charge by "unlocking the CCS plug?" I found a couple Tesla stations several miles from my home and was going to check them out and experiment, though would certainly appreciate some wisdom here as well in this insightful forum. Thanks very much

It's hard to say without knowing the specific charging station you're going to. It's possible it's a magic dock site where you won't need an adapter but you'll need the tesla app to initiate charging. If it's just a V3 supercharger, you'll need an adapter.

Not sure this part is true. It has been posted, in multiple places, that magic dock stations can be activated using plug and charge with a Rivian.

Hmmmmm, @iamnid, that's what I'm wondering. The site info says they are NACS-CCS-250 kW max. And I downloaded the "charge my Tesla" app but there appears to be no way to setup an account. Maybe I didn't download the appropriate app. So much to learn!

If it is a magic dock equipped supercharger you hold the button on the handle for two seconds then push up on the handle. This will release the magic dock ccs adapter from the supercharger then you can just plug in charge if you have a credit card on your Rivian account (works just like RAN charger). If you have a the tesla app and pay for subscription you can get lower price but you need to initiate the charge in the tesla app.

Charge my tesla app is just a supercharger map and has no relation to tesla. You want the tesla app from tesla inc. if you want to set up a subscription for lower rates. Otherwise no need for tesla app if you just want to use plug and charge with magic dock supercharger or nacs supercharger (with nacs to ccs adapter) you will just be billed by Rivian.

The only Magic Dock station in Georgia is on the southwest side of Atlanta (as of the time of this posting). If it's not that one, you'll need a NACS to CCS adapter.

If you're new to EVs, let me suggest the Chargeway App. It's kind of like PlugShare but a little simplified. You put your vehicle in, the adapters you have, and it tells you where you can charge. They are very good about keeping their information up to date.

@iamnid thanks. I think I can just unlock the CCS

@jjswan33 if magic dock is referring to unlocking the CCS part, think I'll be ok. Thanks

@FooF, yep when I hit on charger info, it shows a little demo to access "magic dock." Thanks for clarifying

@Dirtman16 - thanks, this is super helpful. I downloaded Chargeway and see what you mean. And my mistake, the Tesla stop is in Columbia, SC and when I tap on charger info, it indicates unlocking the CCS, so I believe it's a magic dock and will be ok.

Charged my S at that very station on Sunday - worked great. Note the guidance tells you which chargers are CCS and NACS. I too was a little confused about the Tesla stop but looked up spot on internet and found that they had ccs - and when I got there found the little “I” telling me how to unlock and which chargers to use - another proof point for the Riv charging guidance Great spot
