Yes, that's a good question. Of course we hope that the EPA was with 4 motors, and with 2 motors it will be at least 10%-15% better. We should now more in a couple months with real world range tests using conserve mode driving at highway speeds.
according to CS, the EPA was done with 4 wheels engaged and in several of the different modes. Economy mode not confirmed

I would hope so, i was wondering the same as well. However, with ICE systems the difference between a 2WD Tacoma v 4WD has only a 1 mpg difference.
Which is about 5% so on par with an EV Truck.

Good range at 316 miles, it's however, not very efficient. A Highlander hybrid running regular gas can be economically less costly. It beats a regular ICE powered SUV/pickup though.

But who wants to drive a Toyota? lol. (I drove one for 10 years)

I'm wondering how soon on the max pack for the R1S. I think once I see where I am in line (at the end!!!) and when I can get a max pack I'll probably swap to that and the 20s A/T and max pack to deal with the range. I'm not planning on pulling anything but definitely will be using a roof-top cargo carrier and have every seat occupied on trips.

This is measurably wrong. You can literally watch the Wh/mi fall noticeably when using regen frequently in a Tesla. The motors recapture up to 70% if the energy spent in accelerating to speed. This is extremely significant.

absolutely. just got rid of it, but I was going weeks at a time driving in-town getting 200Wh/mi in a 2020 Performance X with 20s on it, thanks to stop and go traffic and hills.

Lol, yes i kind of understand about driving a Toyota for 10 years - I still have one and it's 12 yrs old. The beauty of them is that's it's still running at 12 yrs. with hardly any problem other than scheduled maintenance. Iam/we lucky that we can afford a 70k+ car.

I was hoping for little bit better range with such a large pack. The efficiency of Rivian is making me pause purchase, until further info on upcoming EV's, namely Volvo XC90 replacement due to debut next yr.

Here's my thinking: I'm getting the LE, so choosing wheel size isn't based on price. I think the 20" wheel is the strongest choice because is it forged, unlike the 21" or 22" which are flow forged.

With that in mind, I'm going with the 20" wheels. What tires come on those wheels doesn't matter as much, at least to me. Larger sidewalls equals a more comfortable ride with better shock absorbing characteristics. My experience with OEM tires is that I wear them out pretty quickly, so I'll have a good choice of replacement tires to choose from.

For spare tires, the 20" and the 22" are $800 each, but the 21" is only $600. I'll buy a set of four 21" spares, if Rivian will sell me that quantity. I'll use 1 of the as the actual spare. Yes, the diameter is slightly different, but less difference than a normal 18" car time and a compact spare. Or I'll use them for summer driving and longer trips.
There’s no way you’ll be able to buy a complete wheel and tire assembly for the same price after sale at the spare tire option price.

OEM wheels are crazy expensive. 19” forged wheels for my car are $1400 from the dealer. EACH.

Figure $250-$350 per tire.

Looking for any thoughts on highway grade degradation and regeneration, if I missed it in the thread please point me to it. I live in Phoenix, AZ and my cabin is 150 miles north in Happy Jack, AZ. On the 20" wheels do you think I can make it to the cabin (where I have a charger) going up I-17 and the 260 without having to plug in to top it off? As I came down the mountain last weekend I was pondering what regeneration might exist just going downhill as I was recalling the R1T's getting towed to charge the batteries in the show Long Way Up. I have seen test Rivian's driving between Phoenix and Flagstaff, maybe one of the engineers is a lurker on here and can drop a hint. Thanks!

I am however worried about the situation when I hit 30 to 40k miles and they need to be replaced completely.
It's a very heavy, high power vehicle. I'll wager you'll be likely to get 20-25k if you don't have a lead foot. Myself, I'm expecting I'll get closer to 15k on a set.

Play around with A Better Route Planner.

you should be able to make it with 15-20% to spare.

Less costly in what way? One of these is a luxury truck, one is not.

I added the spare tire so I'm not so worried about the 21 inch tires finding replacements on a trip. I am however worried about the situation when I hit 30 to 40k miles and they need to be replaced completely.

I swapped up to the 22 bright sports this morning. Will see if I stick with them. I might just get the max pack and 20s by the time my journey is done!!!
Big tires for a heavy vehicle are expensive.

consoder though the fuel bill with an equivalent size/weight/power gas truck though, and it should make up for eating more tires.
