Vehicle Access for Shuttle Service

I am planning a overnight kayak camping trip. So will need to have my R1T shuttled from put-in to takeout. Typically I would give the shuttle service a key and have them lock it in the vehicle where they will drop it off. I would then take an extra key and retrieve the vehicle at the end of the trip. I have not done this before with an access system like Rivian has and I have not been able to determine how to lock it with the key in the truck. Seems like this must be a fairly common occurrence and wondered how other people had solved this?

I searched the forum and didn't find anything. I expect this may be something obvious that I am missing, but I have been unable to figure it out. Thanks for any help.

In the settings for access you can set the car to auto lock after 2 min. So if it is the fob, disable proximity and just ask them to wait the 2 min before walking away. ( I would also test this yourself before going)

The same would likely work if you gave them one of the key cards.

Last time I did a kayaking trip like that they shuttled the people, not the vehicle. I wouldn't be keen to turn over the keys to my vehicle (reference my recent post in another thread regarding valet parking).

OK. So, I had a chance to try this today. The setting I believe you mentioned is labeled "Auto Relock". The description is something along the lines of - Lock vehicle after two minutes if doors are not opened. Which would not quite be what I was looking for, but I tried it anyway. And unfortunately, it doesn't work as I need it to. The only way to lock the vehicle without a key (FOB, card, etc) is to lock from the display and get out (which unlocks the drivers side). After waiting several minutes the drivers door doesn't relock. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Give them a card. Have them open the frunk, get out, lock truck. Put the card in the frunk and close it. Or the gear tunnel. Or heck, the spare tire hole in the bed.

I faced this situation a couple of months ago. I looked at lock boxes that would attach to the tow hooks in the front of the vehicle. But then I realized there is a much simpler solution. Give the shuttle driver a key card. Show them how to unlock the vehicle and start the vehicle. When they arrive at the take out have them open the window just barely. Then get out and lock the truck. Once they have locked the truck and verified that it is locked then have them slide the key card in the crack in the window. The key card is so thin that the window barely has to be opened. Even if it rains if the window is just barely opened little or none will get in the vehicle. Your wet gear probably will get more water in the vehicle. You will want to carry the other key card as a back up even if you use the fob or phone to unlock the vehicle (which is always a good practice).

When I told the owner of the shuttle company my car is a Rivian EV she thought it was an RV and said she was sure they could handle it as they have shuttled all types of vehicles. She later looked it up and realized it was the first EV she had ever encountered. I went over most of the fundamentals with her at the put in and had her drive it a short distance but really this is much more to reassure her that it is not that hard to figure out. I printed out the owner's manual since much of the drive is out of cell service and they might need to look up how to change the tire or use the air compressor. I do not know if it is possible to access the owner's manual from the main screen when out of cell service but it is easier for them to use a paper copy then try to find the online owner's manual.

I hadn't thought of it, but this works. I was not aware that you could lock the vehicle with the storage compartments (frunk, gear tunnel) open. I tested it and it does work as you thought. Thanks for the suggestion. Problem solved.

I am going to contact the shuttle company (that I have used in the past) and see if they have dealt with a Rivian before.

In the future you may want to be aware of the solution suggested by @SwampNut that I tested and it works. You can lock the vehicle while the storage areas (frunk, gear tunnel) are open. So instead of leaving the window cracked they can open the frunk, lock the vehicle with the keycard, place the keycard in the frunk, close the frunk and everything is secure with the spare key in the vehicle.

The unfortunate way I learned that you can leave things unlocked is that I've done it, and I was used to my Tesla warning me. After about half an hour it would send an app notification that you left a window, trunk, frunk, door, etc open. The Rivian doesn't. I'm not only naturally forgetful but got used to that so I've left things open on the Rivian overnight.

River ghost - you keep saying "she" and you live in Santa Fe. You aren't by slim chance referring to the shuttle on the San Juan at Mexican Hat are you? Heading there soon, and researching how this is going to work.

@teartags Yes, this is on the San Juan although it is for Clay Hills. Mexican Hat is much easier since there should still be cell service there.

Perfect. I'm more asking because I'll likely use the same shuttle driver and if she understands the protocol for the Rivian, so much the easier for me. Thanks for paving the way!

FYI, you can lock the fob inside the gear tunnel.
