I was thinking the other day that it would probably be pretty easy to add a digital lock box to the R1T bed (for a key card, wallet, phone, etc. if at the beach/etc) via the bolt receivers (with bolts going through the inside of a safe), but then it occurred to me that using the gear guard slots to mount a quick-release safe could be viable.

What I'm imagining is cutting the ends off a gear guard cable, attaching them to some metal jig, feeding the ends through slits cut in the back of a safe, and then welding that metal jig to the inside of the safe. Then you have what looks like a big, 2-pronged power cable plug that you could easily plug into the gear guard slots.

I don't know a lot about metal work but what do you guys think about a solution like that? I could probably hire a local metal worker to do the welding, but I'm not sure of the best way to affix the cable ends to some mounting jig.

It's possible but isn't this what the wristband is for? I locked my phone in the truck and away I paddled last weekend.

I'd be a little worried about the weight of a solid case torquing on the locking mechanism instead of just the cable ends but it should be pretty robust so bet it would work nicely.

Only LEs got wristbands and Rivian doesn't intend to sell them to anyone else.

Depending on the dimensions and weight of the safe, I think it could be fine resting on the slots, but if not, welding a support foot to send weight to the floor of the bed, or potentially even just a little shim piece that distributes weight to the side of the bed, should be pretty feasible.

My bad, I figured they would have those in the gear shop.

I enjoy sharing this dumb key related story:
Once played 18 holes of golf with my key fob securely in the gear tunnel. Except I left that door open the entire time with the key in plain sight. Thankfully nobody took it for a test drive.
Your safe sounds like a much better plan.

But if the truck’s locked, how would you get to it without leaving the tailgate or tonneau open?

This is a great idea. I could see this as being used as a long box that would form-fit to the side of the bed, push into place, click locks, and walk away. Interesting to see if something ever comes up of it. Probably most folks storing long items just use the gear tunnel, but interesting to see how it could apply to other models.
