It's because Rivian's bluetooth strategy is different, and bluetooth stacks in certain phones don't seem to like it.
Which is why they should provide a fob. IMO

Anecdotal opinion - My R1S came with a key fob and 2 key cards. I've had it for ~1 year now and I have NEVER used the fob even once. I used my key card maybe 2-3 times to try out.

I use my phone (older iPhone 11 Pro Max) as the key. At this point, I wouldn't mind terribly if I didn't have the key fob, but I entirely understand it from the perspective that I would still want one and would be slightly upset if I didn't get one as a new owner.

Key card.
True but those always seem to confuse people too. Maybe they are becoming more familiar though. The location you need to hold it on the door seems so precise and in times when I've let friends use the truck they always tell me they can't get the car to recognize.

It is annoying. I printed a how-to for service people like a car wash when I was leaving it.

It's like when the mass computer brands begin to eliminate CD rom drives and USB. It seems like it will be an every day inconvenience but over time you learn to live without it and eventually forget about it.

Elimination of the headphone jack from many mainstream phones hurt a bit more than others... :p

I heard that before, was not really surprised with the new ultra-wideband there will be so many options most people would not probably use the fobs.

The fobs on my G1 rarely leaves the house, I should have waited awhile before I purchased a second one, if I had I would have saved the money.

This was from Rivian Tracker a couple of months ago:

Rivian has confirmed that the second generation of R1 vehicles will include ultra-wideband technology or UWB. Rivian owners can use car keys in Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch, or with select Google Pixel devices, to unlock and start up their vehicles seamlessly and even share keys digitally with family and friends.

UWB will not be coming to Gen 1 vehicles due to hardware limitations.

What is Ultra-Wideband Technology?

Ultra Wideband is a short-range, wireless communication protocol that uses radio waves like Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. However, it drastically improves similar radio technologies’ application possibilities and security levels. The technology is not new and is used mostly for advanced medical devices and other professional uses. But thanks to its recent addition to regular everyday devices like mobile phones and, not least, cars, it will now become more broadly available for end users. Uses vary, but car owners will primarily benefit from UWB’s highly accurate and precise localization capabilities.
I've never used my fob. But when I had my tires rotated and another time for a tonneau replacement the service person needed it, but both times the batteries were dead. Fob vampire drain?

That's an underrated point I hadn't considered since I try to avoid valet parking whenever I can, but when I have no choice, I don't want to have to hand someone a set of instructions along with the keycard and hope that they can follow them. Where are they going to keep the instructions? I'd rather just hand them a key fob.

FWIW, I sock drawered my key fob on day one. Just use phone and keycard as back up. I would LOVE to have a keypad on the door like my Lightning has. That would eliminate the need to carry the keycard. But if you valet your vehicle you would still need one (or the fob).

The Lightning can't use a phone as a key??? And you can't set a temporary PIN for the keypad?

Gen 2 is using entirely different hardware for phone as key.
I'm not going yo argue with you. Until they can prove their system works 100 percent of the time with all major cell options there should be a fob. IMO. My 47 warranty items on my first T have me a little suspicious. Over 30 of them were software related. Great service from Normal SC though.

The key fob in gen 1 had major issues when they first started shipping cars. Proximity for the key is still a pretty recent addition. It's nearly flawless now. Rivian likely didn't want a repeat of that for gen 2 and we'll see the key once their system is more mature.
