It would be awesome if they had a temporary upgrade so you could pay extra for a few day trip where you really can use the extra range. We do a small number of > 300mi trips. I have a hard time justifying the extra cost for the Max for as few days/year that I need long range. If they're going to software limit a max though, I'd happily pay for a temporary boost.

A “road trip package” of boosted range and Autonomy+ would be an incredible subscription option. They could charge crazy money and I would pay for it a couple times a year. There’s probably an ROI inflection point somewhere in there with a monthly option rather than getting fewer buyers paying for max packs and autonomy+ all the time.

Just FYI, many of the large+ packs delivered so far are not locked properly with 140 kwH usable.

Mine currently is. Charged to 100%, drove 120 miles, still at >90% with 330 range estimate (hasn't changed from 330 range estimate at beginning of drive)

I'm sure a patch is coming

You’re assuming the software error is in your favor as opposed to a software error that doesn’t correlate charge levels with miles remaining estimation. It would be interesting to see what happened if you continued driving without charging until close to an indicated zero miles remaining, about the only way to accurately see which way the coding error went.

Just picked up my Large+ 2025 R1T. The display said it was charged to 97% and showed a range of 327 miles when picked up. Drove it 65 miles home at ~3 miles per kwh and arrived home with 300 miles / 88% of range.

The guide said to charge it to 85% for normal driving. But he didn't seem to know anything about the large/large+ issue.

The R1S Large battery option has disappeared from the Rivian Store and Rivian Roamer shows no inventory. Have we reached the end of Large+? ? Was really hoping they would keep offering these until later this year.

Maybe.

For my experience there is literally no difference between a normal Large and it being a Large+, that I can see.. I was DCFC last night and was discussing with my wife that there is so little to be gained by us at this moment by having the Large+, that it shouldn't even be listed as "Large+" anywhere for us to see. Rivian already knows it has a Max pack on it, so what is the useful benefit of putting the "+" anywhere publicly visible?

It's not really a complaint, per se, since I purchased the Large because that's what I wanted (could afford), but a head-scratcher as to why, if it should be 100% functionally the same as a true Large pack, they'd put a "+" there to convince us we're getting some extra value not present.

I was interested in Large+ because:
1. It was stated that you can safely charge to 100% much of the time, since you're really only charging to like 85% of the true battery capacity
2. I read a report somewhere that the charge curve stayed the same as the Max pack, which means it holds a higher charge rate up in the stated 70+% range, so the Large+ should charge 10-80% noticeably faster than a regular large on road trips.
3. There's supposed to be an option to pay and unlock the Max pack capacity later, which I'd probably not do, but it's great to have options.

All good reasons,, imo.

1. I've read that too, and saw an interview with OutofSpec & RivianTrackr that supported this idea, however, on Reddit there is some confusion and some implication that whomever RivianTrackr communicated with on Rivian's side may not have been 100% correct in asserting that the Large+ can safely be charged to 100% regularly because it's a Max pack in disguise.. To me, until I see some official word from someone at Rivian, it is speculation. That said, I've been a bit more generous and gone up to ~90% a few times.
2. I would love for that to be the case, but in my experience so far, it isn't. Each time I've had longer DCFC sessions my curve would dip below 100kw at about 84% SOC. That's at about 91kWh of my usable capacity, which I believe is about 65% of a Max pack's usable. However, I haven't seen any documented charge curves for the Gen 2 Max pack yet, but it seems that is a low SOC to dip below 100kw charge rate if Large+ is indeed mimicking the Max's curve.
3. I'm hoping for that too. I don't ever see there being a subscription service to on-demand, temporarily unlock the capacity as that would rob sales of the Max pack, but the idea that I could throw down one lump sum to permanently unlock it at some point down the road is definitely appealing.

Holding 100kw until 84% is really good. From the examples I'm seeing, the Gen 1 Large pack went below 100kw around 65% and ramps down to 50kw or so at 80%.

That feels crazy slow to me.
Here's an example at a recent RAN stop plugging in at 25% SOC:

84% to 86% - 99.3kw
Starting at 87%, it ramped down quickly:
87% - 91kw
90% - 63kw
92% - 42kw
94% - 25kw
96% - 22kw

I believe the equivalent SOC on the Max pack at those points would be from 65% to 74%. The time it would take to get to 85% on the Max would just be so slow that it wouldn't be worth it to ever DCFC past 70% on the Max. I have to believe that this is the same curve as the normal Large.

Edit: I was the only one present at this RAN for the entirety of the session.
Edit 2: To verify I just checked 2 other DCFC sessions, one at another RAN and another at Electrify America and the top-end of the charge slowed similarly. One session pushed 100kw for an extra % but then dropped to roughly the same rates after that.

Large+ can be upgraded to Max at some point and daily use can reduce battery degradation. Also has a better charging curve.

Considering R1T
Visiting an old thread - I am looking at buying an R1S and am now seeing used 2025 Large+ cars. It is kind of annoying (IMO) there's no clear path to pay-to-unlock to a Max. Some of these used cars will be a very good value if that option does appear.

What if the option costs $10k?

Given the option to go from Large to Max at purchase is $7K, that seems unlikely. May as well say “what if it’s $20k, or $30k?”

Nonetheless, having the option still beats not having the option, and right now Rivian does not have the option. Every time I’ve ever made an inquiry about my Large+ they barely admit the Large+ exists. I don’t see any option to unlock the additional capacity coming anytime soon though hope I’m wrong.
