Seeking any data on the efficiency difference between the 22” wheel options for the Rev2 vehicles. They have the same range on the website and the EPA page does not help either. I see quotes from Rivian staff saying anywhere from a few miles to a few percent. Digging through these forums and Reddit does not provide much solid data but I could have missed a thread for sure.

It also appears that they have the same tires from Pirelli however I haven’t seen the specific specs laid out for each so that may not be true.

On my Tesla Model 3 it made at most 2-3% difference however that was a smaller wheel and also smaller wheel wells and other factors that could reduce the impact of the change. It was also the same wheel in that comparison and in this case the whole wheel is being changed not just covers coming off.

thanks!

I am also interested to see if anyone has real world data regarding the differences.

Logically, the Range wheels should be measurably more efficient at highway speeds, such as at 80 mph. At 25 mph, aerodynamics plays a much smaller role, and they should be measurably identical if they have the same tires. That would explain why EPA range is the same: the speeds included in the EPA cycle are not high enough (or long enough) to show the impact of better aerodynamics.

The 22” range wheels are forged, not cast like the normal 22’s. Motortrend and other outlets also found 3-5% improvement in efficiency with aero caps. So, with lighter wheels and aero caps on I’d say 5% better efficiency is a good estimate.

I can only give you data points. Perfect driving conditions, flat, no wind, 75mph constant, 80-90 degrees exterior temp, 75 degrees HVAC auto, 1000 miles, 500 there, 500 back, 2.36 miles per kw.

Edit: gen2 with the sexy looking 22s, not the ugly ones.

Gen2? Which wheels?

I thought it was weird that Rivian makes no distinction between wheel options when it comes to range. I know that Tesla will show you the difference if you change wheel options, but Rivian doesn't do that at all, from what I've seen with their online configurator. I guess they feel the difference isn't substantial enough that anyone would care.

Uhh, which ones are those? I've seen people that love each of them.
I happen to like the Range wheels but many people don't. I have never heard of anyone who doesn't like the default Gen2 22s.

I’m a fan of the Range wheels too, FWIW. Happy Friday all.

Per the title, any "real world" data yet on the 22" range wheels at highway speeds (where they are supposed to make a difference)? As others have stated, city speeds - "aero" benefits don't contribute...hence EPA data doesn't show any meaningful difference...

I have them on my Tri. I have nothing to compare them to since both my previous Rivians were QM. The Tri gets 10-15 percent better efficiency in conserve, but have no idea how much the $1,000 range tires/wheels have to do with it. Sales contact said 3-4 miles (one percent) on a full charge, and he insinuated the upcharge is really just for the plastic wheel covers. Vehicle had everything else I wanted so I just paid it. Wheel covers trap winter dirt which then sets up in the brakes too. Clunk every time I first back out of the garage breaking the crud loose in the brakes. Don't get it.

I ended up getting the sport dark since that config came up first instead of the range wheels. Sounds like maybe I lucked out. If there was a clear and meaningful efficiency benefit it would be one thing but it’s not clear that is the case at all.

I think the Range Wheels are kinda cool, but clearly this is an individual thing. I do, however, wish that there was a more meaningful, and quantifiable, benefit to having them.

On the looks side, there are plenty of pics with the plastic aero caps on. Will be good to see how they look on the vehicle with caps off for all the wheels. Like the 21" caps off was actually nice and when darked-out, was even better.

Edit: Found one post with a pic (cap off and chrome delete):
