I think it’s also worth noting that 20 reporters just drove these things for days and almost none complained about the lack of AA or CarPlay. Maybe it’s good enough or maybe they were just dazzled by the built-in flashlight….

Those reviews were made by invitation under Rivian-controlled conditions to highlight the adventure part. And it's great - but hardly impartial conditions or extensive testing.

Nobody testing for us commuters ;)

Just FYI, Android Auto is now wireless.

I’d be fine if there was a decent library of native apps available (Waze, etc), but thats not the case…at least for now.

It is IF your car is wifi enabled, which my current vehicle is not. The Rivians will are so you would have wireless AA, but my understanding is that it is even more processing and battery intensive than standard AA.

I have a 2013 car, bought in 2015. Just when Android Auto and Apple CarPlay became good. For 6 years now I have waited to replace my car to finally be done with awkward phone mount, overheating phone from being constantly on, and non-integrated Waze direction for my travels.

I put an order for the R1T absolutely certain that no car company would ever return to pre-2010 mentality of assuming their system is so good, they do not need offer that compatibility. Needless to say that after watching countless reviews, I just heard yesterday that Android Auto will not be supported and I am devastated. If I pay $100k for a truck, I surely hope it supports a standard feature that all decent cars supported for the past 8 years. $30k cars have it so it is not a cost problem. It is an ego attitude. Even Toyota - a notorious holdout to Android Auto - agreed to add the feature in 2019.

I understand Rivian thinks its GPS system is amazing but that missed the point. I think the UI is gorgeous too, but that does not change that I want MY music app, not yours, I want Waze for my commute, I doubt your GPS has the Waze info (if it does, let me know), etc... Rivian needs to stop thinking they will be the one for all. Be compatible. The beauty of an EV truck is that it can be a commuter vehicle AND an adventure vehicle. And the speccs and reviews all confirmed it. So let us commuters have what we need, and commuters use Waze.

My only hope is that I read that an OTA update could add the feature in the future. So I won't cancel my order yet of course, but Rivian, I beg you, add the feature.
You joined a forum today, just to say that you may cancel your order over a service that has been discussed ad nauseam on this same forum? ?

But we're talking about the Rivian here, not some old random car. I don't understand your point. AA/Carplay would certainly be wireless if they implemented it in the Rivians, and therefore your concerning about plugging in your phone everytime you get in the car should not be a concern.

We must have read/watched different reviews. Nearly every review I saw mentioned it as an oversight.

Just from the first few aritcles in the list on the other thread:

Rivian's infotainment does not feature Android Auto or Apple CarPlay connectivity, which seems like a bit of a miss. Theoretically, a future update could add these features later, but there are currently no plans to do so.
One big whiff, though: the R1T lacks both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
But there’s no Sirius XM if you’re away from cell service, which isn't uncommon while off-roading, and the only way to bring your smartphone into the mix is via Bluetooth streaming audio. Like Tesla products, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not supported, and the USB-C ports around the cabin are power-only.
It does not have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto yet.. We'd expect those phone connections to come sooner or later, probably via an over-the-air update

Sorry can you link that "other thread" ? I swear I search before posting but did not see relevant titles. I watch most reviews on YouTube on those few did not mentioned it.

You can disagree with me but yes I join to express my frustration when learning of this. Otherwise I don't feel the need to post to say nothing relevant.

No I read the same ones. Zero said this is a deal breaker and it’s a brick without this capability, which is the OP argument.

You said:

That's just not accurate at all. Almost every single one mentioned it and the vast majority complained about it one way or another.

There are a few nitpicks I had with the R1T. The lack of CarPlay or Android Auto is a bummer
More conspicuous by their absence, however, are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Do you have an EV right now? I'll give you my EV driver perspective on it.

The things that Android Auto restricts makes using it really difficult for EV purposes. Waze doesn't let you enter a trip with automatic consideration on where you will need to charge. Right now you have to do that on your own. For gas vehicles it's never been a worry because stations are everywhere, and in places they aren't, you get signs warning you. For every day drives, it's not really a big deal, but if you're planning on driving to a lot of places far away from home that will require recharging, it's a big annoyance. Having to do any of that stuff right now requires flipping through a couple apps to check, and doing it while driving is really annoying because you don't get good results.
