I absolutely love my R1T, and my only real complaint has been Apple Music usability. Honestly once that works as it is suppose to I won’t really care about updates and new features. Having said that I’ve been through 3-4 updates since I got the truck end of May, Things they add or change in these updates have not worked for me. I bought the truck knowing it did not have Apple Music nor CarPlay. So these were not deal breakers for me. I was elated when they announced Apple Music, but from the update that it was added, it hasn’t worked right for me. I have an 8-10 minute commute to work, so 2-3 songs. Having the song start over or simply refuse to play and having to go to another playlist/album to get it to pay again is annoying. So when they announced in the last update that it fixed those issues I was stoked. That update did not fix the issue.
When I got back to work today after lunch I got the update notification. Since I was going to be at my desk for the next 3-4 hours I went ahead and updated. One of the new features announced in this update was for live cam and it is now suppose to remain on the last camera view. Once the update was done the only feature I could try out from my desk was the live cam in app. Went in and it defaulted to the left side mirror view as always. I selected the front cam. Backed out of live cam and waited about 10 minutes before going back in. Camera defaulted to left side mirror again. So I selected front cam again backed out then went right back in. Defaulted to left mirror cam. When I got in the truck after work I could see the drivers screen changes and once I started up Apple Music the sound was noticeably better. I did an infotainment reset and tried the live cam again after all came back up. Still defaulting to left mirror cam again. So obviously that new feature is not working.
I have not gone back out since getting home to see if Apple Music is fixed as it says it was again in the release notes. Not holding my breath.
They do test updates before releasing them right? Is it because there are so many “variety” of Rivians out there? I know the Gen 1’s and Gen 2’s have different hardware, but do Gen 1’s of different build dates have different hardware, perhaps because of supply issues? Back in my IT days a company I worked for had all “same” model of computers but they were all built at different times over the course of a few years and we had to have different updates based on the hardware that was installed at the different build dates, even though on paper all the specs of the hardware were the same. Could this affect how the Rivians updates work on individual trucks? I know at the time I bought my R1T I had downloaded the manual in advance to see where the various outlets were in the truck. I bought a 12v Frunk cooler because the manual said there was a 12v outlet in the frunk. I had a back up camera screen for my travel trailer and was planning on using the outlet under the center screen to power it. I discovered my truck had neither of these and when I reached out to Rivian was told that those had been eliminated for my build because of supply shortages. I get those are not software controlled but it makes me think that Rivian had to use different components that may have the same specs but are still different when it comes to how they interact with the software. Sorry for the ramble. I really just want Apple Music to work and not worry about future updates breaking the things they are suppose to fix or be fixed when they state they are fixed. End rant.
