How fast are you looking to drive? And can the vehicle be plugged in at either end?

Not sure any EV beyond a Lucid will make a ~200 mile round trip at 75+ MPH at 10F or lower ambient temps.
Are you joking? We have owned 5 EV's (still own 4 of them) and all of them can make a 200 mile round trip at 10F at 75 mph without a problem. Even the ones that are 6 years old and have 70K-110K miles on the odometer. None of them were made by Lucid.

In my opinion Musk has damaged the brand and I will never purchase another Tesla. There are other EVs out there.
He hasn't damaged the brand, he has actually expanded their addressable market by appealing to a wider customer base. They just reported record Q3 sales volume.

That's a fact.

Don’t recommend owning a Rivian. Might have been said before, but the service (for repairs) is so incredibly bad it just isn’t worth it. My Rivian is in service for a suspension issue for over a month now (sSF center). They didn’t even touch it for the first two weeks it was there.

This is typical of most service centers. You have get loud. Once you do, things start moving quickly. Unfortunately, as they say, the squeakiest wheel gets the grease. Sad it is this way right now, but if you sit and wait, they will keep you waiting.

Thank you for the tip.
Unfortunately, I don’t know how to be loud. I try to be overly nice and understanding with people working in service. The thing I dislike most about someone is a sense of entitlement.

Do you have any suggestions what I could do/say?

Nice works too. That is my approach and it works great.

250 miles with a single charge when temp is under/around 10 degrees.
This is borderline range for my R1T QM. I live in the mountains so mileage is more impacted, and snowy roads make it worse. 10 degrees is not unusual here, and easily costs me 25-30% of max range, if the roads are clear. Set up charging to finish just before you leave in the a.m.. It will warm the battery and be more efficient.

Few things—

New Gen2 R12, 20AT and Max pack. On a mostly highway trip yesterday, I got around 330 miles. She is very sensitive to high speeds. Going, I pushed to around 75 to 77 (speeds were 65) and I ran close to 2.1 KWh. Coming home, I stayed below 75, cruise control on, and higher regen, then came up to 2.5+. So, speed whacks your range.

My new Gen2 spent 3 weeks in the SC after purchase. I was able to elevate my issues to the Regional Manger for the region by searching through the internet looking for titles of regional leadership, then e-mail addresses through LinkedIn. Received attention and a loaner R1T during the entire period. Since then, knock on wood, no major problems other than software-type glitches including the Halloween costumes which they turned off and then fixed in 2 days with an update. That has become the highlight of my driveway for friends and family members sitting or watching the car—but, make sure you completely deactivate it as it enjoyed continuing by itself after exit for a while.

If you are experiencing your iPhone switching to Apple Pay on the charging pad of late, let me know if you have seen a solution. This started happening after picking up a new iphone16–so, not sure if this is an Apple thing or Rivian charging pad issue.

Speaking of Apple, the Rivian pulls over the contacts into the phone screen. But, either I am too stupid or it’s a software thing, when you press the contact name on the Rivian screen, it doesn’t dial the contact. What am I doing wrong??

Agreed. My suggestion is calling and having them handle the scheduling. I found that by having a conversation on the phone with a delightful person, I was able to get an sc appointment much more quickly and had a wonderful experience. I posted about it in the SC forum area because I see so many posts about how bad it is and I had a great experience so far.

EDIT: Just to mention, this is Chelsea, MA. I am quite far away and they really try and accommodate. I suspect there are many very busy ones in California, due to the significant density of vehicles registered there compared to elsewhere, which leads to seemingly some unfortunate experiences.

Mine is the same. They want us to be able to use our Rivians consistently and safely. So do we.

We talk person-to-person, using their expertise about the vehicle and my knowledge of my experience, and we work out something we all can be comfortable with.

That's at the Portland (OR) Service Center. Other centers may operate differently, but my experiences at Portland have consistently met or exceeded my expectations.

R1S dual performance max pack
Hi
I currently own a model Y with 142,000 miles on it. I commute daily 180 miles, mainly in highways. I live in upper NY where it snows and there can be snow squalls when driving in the winter, highway maintenance crews can't keep up with the 1-2 feet of snow falling rapidly. My Y works but I run in to range issues in the winter. Also I am looking for a Musk alternative. I am on the wait list for R2, so another 2 years before I get my hands on it.

We do not have a local service center, nearest one is 5 hours away. How reliable are the R1Ss? I see so many negative comments and people selling their R1S due to poor construction and support.

Please be honest. Would you recommend a used R1S 2023 for my purpose? Range [need 225 miles on a single charge at temps in the low 10s], reliability and support if needed.

Thanks.
Be fully aware and fully appreciative of the fact that you are buying a new vehicle without a long track record from a fledgling company without longstanding infrastructure in place, including the service aspect. I have personally found the service center in Boise is very hard to work with, abrupt cancellation of mobile appointment, difficult to reach a person directly on the phone, no direct landline number, they aren't really set up for customer satisfaction, they seem to be terribly understaffed, no customer waiting lounge, run out of a warehouse, very much a makeshift operation. I would personally avoid with the nearest service being 5 hours away as things do and will come up. But, if you otherwise love the concept and are willing to roll with it, then follow your gut. Mine is very much a love-hate relationship with this vehicle. I feel like my love for the concept and look at the vehicle made me somewhat blind to all of the downsides initially.

Hi there, I and my partner have 2 1st gen R1Ts, a Quad and Dual both with Large pack batteries (which are different from the current gen large packs.) We both LOVE our trucks. They have both performed flawlessly other than sometimes the infotainment system needs a reboot. We also had a leak in the suspension system which was fixed quite easily by the service center. Honestly its the best vehicle either of us have ever owned and we might even be Rivian owners for life. I get why you see a lot of complaints, but I can say we both love ours and almost every member of our local Rivian owners club will say the same.

As for driving conditions, I drive my Large Dual Motor 1st gen at least once a week to my hockey games. I drive over a couple mountains to get there, about 120 miles, 4000 feet of elevation gain and 6000 going down, and it takes 2 hours. So about 10000 total gain and loss and 240 miles traveled. In the Summer time It takes my truck about 68% (89Kwh) of its battery to complete the trip and in the winter with the cold and snow it goes up to about 80%(105Kwh) That mountain pass is about 0 degrees in the winter.

I have the regular all season tires, and they handle it like a champ. Snow, slush, you name it, and I feel confident in the Rivian.

So if you were to do a Rivian and get the 2nd gen, I would recommend going for the Max pack. And also while its snowing, make sure you take time to clear your headlights every hour or so. Snow and slush stick to them so bad.

I purchased an R1S in September 2023. Quad motor. I took a trip through the winter mountains of Washington state and got about 250 miles at freeway speeds through the mountains in cold weather.

My vehicle has been very reliable. I got the compact spare tire installed at my house. I had a rock chip from a semi truck that a local glass company fixed. Nothing else has come up.
