Yeah, but there are some knowns.. Someone asked this same basic question recently which got some good responses but for the life of me I can't immediately find it.

I know for certain that air suspension won't be in the R2 based on what I was told at the recent Nashville tour. Just about everything else will probably depend on what types of packages Rivian decides to offer and what the market will bear.

That being said, I'm with you - R1S isn't for me simply because of its size. If I can get an R2 with the same basic specs as I'd otherwise get on an R1S I'm going to be a pretty happy camper, even if it means paying much more for it. I'm already steeling myself to pay at least $60k to get what I want in my eventual R2....
Does it feel like Rivian is less premium each model release/iteration. To me it seems like it’s headed in that direction as the company tries to be more profitable and making it more affordable. In the long run, can Rivian compete with Tesla (for example) if they are less premium. Personally, I will opt for Tesla - much much better navigation, software, mire service centers, and more chargers accessible to me.

That's interesting to hear your perspective because mine is pretty much the exact opposite. I'm a long-time Tesla owner (bought my Model S in 2013) and not a Rivian owner yet but am anxiously awaiting the R2. For me, personally, a big part of the reason that I'm looking forward to R2 is that Tesla feels to me like it's doing exactly what you're saying with each subsequent vehicle - making their vehicles less and less premium / appealing in order to make them more profitable and manufacturable.

While I've loved my Model S, it's always been fairly 'minimalist' and Tesla just keeps chasing that goal more and more. The R2 interior, in particular, looks downright sumptuous compared to the spartan, stark miles of plastic in the Models 3, Y and the Cybertruck. I love that Rivian has kept the driver's gauge display (which is something that I've sorely missed when driving rental Model 3's). I love the nice little touches like the in-door flashlight in the R2. One the outside, I feel like the R2 and especially R3/R3X have miles more personality than anything Tesla has come up with recently. In short (too late, I know), I feel like Rivian has done an exceptional job of keeping a "premium" feel and product at a much more attainable price.

Being with Tesla since early on, I guess I'm also more willing to overlook the other issues you stated. Software and navigation can and will improve over time (just like it did with Tesla). Service centers will expand and improve over time (when I first got my Model S, they had to send a ranger hundreds of miles to service my car, now they've moved into their second facility in the area). Chargers... well, I got to benefit from the Supercharger network with my Model S and now I'll get to benefit from it again with the R2 - especially with the built in NACS port.

Seeing the R2 in person recently solidified for me that Rivian is serious and that the R2 / R3 are the absolute right steps forward for them. R2 / R3 will open up the Rivian experience for millions more people while I'm sure the R1 series will continue to grow and evolve for those who want and can afford a more premium experience (just like with Tesla and the Models X and S).

Just hoping they keep the 360 top down assist during parking! I've gotten so reliant on it now and have become obsessed with parking straight and centrally in spot!

That would be nice. I’ve never had that feature in any car I’ve ever had. And my wife likes to remind me that I park like hot garbage so maybe that would improve my ability. ;-)

As long as you don't care about your wheels. Source: someone who has had it.

My Model S is way wider than any other car I've ever had, and it definitely took me a while to understand that. Curb rash is a real thing to be sure...

I meant specifically for auto park. I've owned 7 Model S's now and learned that you park it yourself if you care about the edges of your wheels. Because auto park doesn't.

Ah. My Model S is OLD. I don't even have parking sensors, much less auto park. So all my curb rash is self-inflicted. ;-)

The link in your link suggests 4% is the slope of the back seats, not the front. Either way, not much to go on.
The devil is in the details. Nice catch!

That seems to be long gone. The designer who was at Nashville did say, however, that it was important for them to have it so that a 6ft tall person could sleep in the back with the rear seats folded down. I am emphatically not a camper so this means absolutely nothing to me, but hopefully it means something to you more adventurous folks out there. ;-)
LOL...I always say I went to college so I wouldn't have to camp.

I got nothing against campers or camping. I just don't wanna do it. ;-)

I don't want to sleep on the ground. I don't want to sleep in a bag. I don't want to sleep in a tent. I don't want to poo in the woods. I don't want to deal with bugs. I don't want to have to build a fire. Etc. etc.

I've got friends who love camping and hiking and I'm happy for them. I am much more of an Airbnb on the beach kind of guy, myself. ;-)

No I think they are differentiating models. The new Ascend trim is i7 nice IMO. Rivian wants to create a reason to buy the 110k and up vehicles.

We "camp" a ton when we road trip. Our "camping" though is nothing like when we actually go up in the mountains when we're back home to do real camping. These days, we use the Teslas for that too because it eliminates a lot of the negatives mentioned with traditional camping. The bulk of our use though is more similar to a scenario where you're driving and get tired and want to pull over to take a nap. Now imagine that "nap" is 8 hours overnight in a perfectly controlled climate situation with a comfortable mattress and real pillows and blankets. We take multi-week road trips and have found that we do this more often than AirBnB as it gives us far more flexibility on when and where we sleep. An added bonus is it saves a bunch of money too but the convenience factor is the primary reason for us.

Too bad it doesn't get the Bowers and Wilkins level of sound system the I7 has. To me...Ascend really needs a proper premium audio system to be added.

I agree they have to step that up. The rest is great but the sound is average at best.
