Sounds like my wife's problem if we ever replace our R1 ;)

Reason number (too many to count) to keep my Gen 1
what are some of your other reasons?
we have a very beat up LE LGcolor we plan to keep beating up and smiling about
it's as far from a lemon as you can get.

Yeah if they really want to cut costs, the glass roof that I already have covered by a liner is a great place to start.
tell us about that liner.
agree lose the roof. Hate to see what replacement costs - our rear T glass was originally $4.6k quote finally Sc did it for $1600
It's a pick up - people put things there- we say a flat piece of glass not a compound curve so anyone can cut a piece of lexan for quick temporary use.we are considering a lexan guard with suction cups in case some expert here has a better idea

That would be an interesting cost analysis. My understanding is the open roof in itself is a cost savings for the manufacturing process to reduce time and effort as it goes through the line. If that is so then the analysis would be is a solid panel with insulation and a headliner cheaper than the glass panel?

I would prefer a solid roof, would be interesting to see how many people had the large glass panel as a large factor as part of the purchase decision. They certainly could have chargeable options to cover cost, like solid panel, glass panel, or operating sunroof panel.

Hands down I would choose the solid panel but I am probably in the minority. My old Jeep GC Overland had the large glass roof with a working sunroof and a liner that closed over it, my liner was always closed. ??

SORRY THIS POST SHOULD GO TO a GLASS ROOF THREAD but not sure how
one of you techsters can try
Glass roof is a long way from the cubby
Lets do a poll for the glass roof
we always liked retractable moonroofs when filming bicycle events for the videographer to stick out the top.
We hardly even use the sunroofs in the kona and forget there's glass in the T
Trouble is they usually start direct;y overhead and getting a view is more for the rear pax.
ragtops also have the windscreen/visors extending directly overhead so having your head 'in the open air' is a non starter
Another vote for plain roof
hate to see what would happen when a pedal, fork, or crankarm of a bicycle smacks into the glass.

Flip that on its head... keeping that cubby is really going to send the company into a tailspin. Wow. / s

The ridiculous over-apologizing for this company boggles the mind. The company makes a product, and has regularly slashed features from that product. Scrutinize and question change, don't yes-man them like a fawning puppy. It's OK to hold them to account for things that one consumer might value, while you only value defending it almost no matter what they do. I doubt Scaringe is sending you holiday cards thanking you for berating other forum posters on the company's behalf.

No glove box and now the removal of storage, if as a cost-cutting move, seems so in the margins that if the pennies this move saves per vehicle is that needed, then the company really is in a world of hurt.

Next you'll tell us that we have so much storage because of the front trunk and sub trunk in the rear that we don't need any interior storage at all. It's ok for passengers to just climb to the back and get what they need in the ample storage provided. What is unimportant to you doesn't need to be unimportant to everyone. If it's no concern of yours, then you're invited to bypass the thread entirely. It's almost like you have a vested interest in making sure you argue with anyone that has a complaint. Minimizing others' concerns with trolling is beneath someone that puts on a pretense of intelligence.

I wish I could since, like you mentioned, most other things are. Sadly not all states allow it, even if mine did, driving out of state could be an issue, so I keep the paper copies to stay in compliance.
As important as it is, I am not comfortable handing my phone over to anyone to show something. I would rather show a piece of paper. Also, if the phone is discharged or breaks from an accident, how would you show proof. I was also in a situation where I have to show something (on my phone) while on the phone.

I'm surprised they never added a glove box or at least a recessed cubby hole in the dash. There is plenty of space behind the dash to do it and it would be minimal cost. Or maybe offer a glove box option to amortize the cost? Right now I am using one of my wife's large hair bungees on my visor to keep shit from falling out.

Well, glad I got my Gen2 when they first rolled out. I use it for my sunglasses. Would be annoying to not have a spot for them anywhere, especially with no glovebox, which is, let’s face it, weird. Though, having to use voice to open the one in my Tesla makes it pretty useless and there’s no sunglasses storage in the Y either. But, I get the need to simplify and try to make money. Wonder what else will be shaved off as the Gen2 production numbers increase and they face the next quarterly sales figures.
I set the long press on the left scroll wheel to open the glovebox. Otherwise, it felt weird talking to the glovebox ?

Haha yes I guess I could do that, but might as well keep it weird!

Amen. I have arthritis I can’t even see out the glass roof. I think the grand kids may like it.

I just ran across this article:

https://www.carscoops.com/2024/12/r...-seat-storage-in-gen-2-r1t-and-r1s-heres-why/

According to the article they ONLY removed the passenger side cubby and, allegedly, it was because Rivian determined very few people were using the passenger side cubby. The image from the article shows it missing on the Ascend trim too.
I'm glad they did that. My wonderful wife "lost" her favourite pair of sunglasses after storing them there. It took almost a month of searching all our cars, the entire house and god knows what else to finally realise that it was in the passanger cubby.

Re: Rivian finances / costs, a lot of people keep saying “lost” when it’s more appropriately “spent.” You’re referring to a company in a still early, heavy growth stage in an industry that requires mad capex.
No sir, I'm (and others) are directly quoting Rivian (or RJ) on loss per vehicle, not just saying lost. Read their earnings statement.

Of course it's based on R&D spend before delivering vehicles, but in the end it's all about profit/loss per vehicle just like any other manufacturer.
