Living in Florida with decent roads, I have only ever used Sport mode at the lowest suspension
setting.
I could alwys use more power!

I prefer Ford's Lightning throttle mapping over R1. Just feels like the throttle is directly connected to the rubber. Comparing the two makes you realize Rivian has a lag which makes it actually a bit unpredictable. I got used to it, but every time I get into the Lightning, I realize that it could be better.

The notes now say

Improved acceleration response in All-Purpose drive mode.
Dunno what this new update is, but I can stab the throttle to the music in all purpose and it doesn't do anything as long as I return to the same spot immediately. Better response would eliminate that behavior.

Strictly for sake of illustration, this is what throttle mapping of most basic crap cars look like. What it feels like to drive is a off or on experience; with very little response in between. Nothing. Nothing. Bang. If you've rented one, you know exactly what that's like. Unless a race car, you likely will not encounter a car with perfectly linear throttle map. Even higher performing cars have one with a curve, because it's bad business to kill customers. I don't expect Rivian to increase power output of All Purpose. Otherwise, what'd be the point of having Sport mode? What they might have done is change existing curvature, to improve impression of responsiveness.

#RollingRollingRolling (on bump stops). Man. I grew up with sports cars…my toy is an FD Rx-7, but bouncing off the ‘stops isn’t fun. Even just pulling in/out my driveway in kneel/low/lowest isn’t pleasant.

For lowest and stiffer? I wonder if it’s more form in sport than AP?
Cheap cars have on/off throttles!

What? In context of throttle mapping, the difference between Conserve, AP and Sport is the curvature of the mapping, more and more linear. And that same amount of pedal depression is mapped to different amounts of power output in each of the drive modes. AFAIK, the pedal does not change stiffness pending drive mode. It's a mechanical return spring that is providing resistance.

From OTA notes on riviantrakr:
"Enhanced acceleration in All-Purpose mode."

Sounds to me, same end points, just a different profile to the curve.

Safety and risk management is why car companies are conservative on throttle mapping—so they don't get sued for unintended acceleration. Customers' driving skills vary vastly and the lowest denominator (not the average) sets the bar. If they build a car to that bar, the company's ass is more covered. This is also why our R1s have such a stiff spring on the pedal (so we don't all end up like Alan Ruck, but some will regardless because they are... just extra special).

I thought I read somewhere that sport mode was the only mode in which you got full torque output on the Gen 1 quad.

Feels like they have been refining all purpose mode for efficiency in the last few updates. That's been my qualitative observation.

Yea, but that creates more front tire wear around town as the rear motors are disengaged. Tesla has a chill mode for reduced performance and throttle response which is good when not on the freeway if you want to optimize efficiency
Maximum efficiency and having maximum power available with an aggressive throttle mapping are not mutually exclusive, especially if you're just cruising. This is a big advantage EVs have over ICE, where aggressive use of the throttle uses more fuel to richen the mixture under heavy load. The increased tire wear in conserve mode is due to the increase in negative camber from the lower ride height, not because the rear motors are disconnected.

Yes, same for performance dual.

Maybe they gave us Launch control but in All Purpose wit the highest suspension settings. It can be called 'Flipper Mode'

Am I unpopular in suggesting the extra "sport" power should just be available in the last 10-20% of the pedal movement when in AP mode?

I agree there is a delay when in all purpose that would benefit from being addressed, but no thanks to making the throttle more sensitive in AP mode. If the road is bumpy, I can easily start waffling +/- 3mph every few seconds in sport mode already.

Yeah, I even get that in all purpose mode a little, though less now after many software updates.

I would also love to get a much softer throttle response in the first 10-20%. For neighborhoods and parking lots. Right now I have to be really precise on the throttle. For example, try to do a 3 point turn somewhere in between “I have all day” and “throw the passengers around like a roller coaster.” It’s hard for me.

I’d love it if they made AP a bit more aggressive but added a “chill” mode or setting for people like me.

Is it more responsive in sport?
