Just noticed this on my truck as well. Previously stated 203 and now 199 at 70%
ā€˜22 R1T large on 20ā€ AT. Interesting.
Mine is a 2023 R1T large pack with the same tires and my mileage at 70% is 219 miles of range. So odd.

Perhaps there was some tweaking of the algorithm but I would think Rivian would need to keep max range at least as high as what they are advertising. Otherwise they are setting themselves up for consumer fraud. That being said, I personally think Rivian left little top end buffer in my Max pack in order to inflate total range.

I used to get a consistent 269/270 miles when charged to 70%.
With new software update it now is reading 262 miles of range at 70%.

Am I missing something here?
Is there a reason this would happen?

btw, I have a 2025 R1T dual max

May not be relevant, but since we’re all putting cards on the table: ā€˜22 R1T, no difference noted with OTA update. 226 mi at 70%. Running the stock 21s

Quad R1s. always charged to 80% and sit at 249 miles and unchanged.
For those that got miles decreased, maybe do a hard reset?

Hard reset is a good idea. I think I’ll try that.

Complete a few driving/charging cycles. I'm sure it'll go back to the usual numbers.

Also saw a decrease in range at 70%. Went from 195 to 191 miles on R1S Launch with 20ā€ AT tires.

Just posted about this on Reddit:

I just updated both of our R1s—one is a Gen1 with about 5,800 miles and was originally listed as a 131 kWh pack, and the other is a Gen2 with only 197 miles on the clock and originally a 141 kWh pack. Interestingly, both trucks showed a noticeable jump in their reported state-of-charge (SoC) percentage immediately following the update.

Digging a little further (and looking at API data through Home Assistant), I noticed something odd:

• Gen1 R1: Now reports ~122 kWh (previously ~131 kWh — an OG large pack)

• Gen2 R1: Now reports ~136 kWh (previously ~141 kWh — a Gen2 max pack)

Since our charge targets are based on the BMS’s reported capacity, this effectively means the total kWh stored in the battery at each percentage has changed. In practical terms, we’re seeing an effective range loss of a few percentage points when charging to, say, 85%, because 85% of a smaller reported capacity yields fewer total kilowatt-hours - the estimated miles has also dropped inline with the BMS reported capacity.

I’m wondering if this recalibration is intentional for accuracy (e.g., adjusting for degradation, temperature, or something else not previously accounted for), or if something else is at play?

This really stinks when combined with the weird charging at above 80% on our brand new tri max, as it’s self reported range is now less than our (lightly) used gen1 dual large - despite Rivian marketing it as having significantly greater range - the R1’s themselves tell a different story - with the gen1 large now reporting 336 miles range at full charge vs 333 in the tri max. Now I’m not naive enough to belive we will get the EPA rated range, but this really shows how disconnected Rivian’s marketing is becoming from reality.

edit: fixed accidental reference to gen2 large pack rather than max pack

Wow. Good research. Chopping 5 kWh off the top of the pack is exactly what it looked like for me and I hypothesized happened earlier in this thread.

You mentioned a gen 2 ā€œlargeā€ having 141 kWh previously but I think you mean Max (as you mentioned elsewhere in your post)

Oops you are spot on, it’s a gen2 max pack. I’ll edit and fix - thanks!

The miles of range numbers are literally guesses. That could change from any small tweak to their guess-o-meter heuristic. It's not significant.

A change to how battery management works is obviously significant. We should discuss that and battery percentages or kWh, not estimated miles of range.

It sounds like some are saying the update reduced the usable kWh. That would obviously reduce total range for someone going 100%-0% but it wouldn't necessarily affect charging speed, that is probably based on more sophisticated systems than just cutting the speed down at 80% or something.

Others are saying it just changed how the battery management is calibrated and how it estimates its current percent charge. It will be great if we can get to the bottom of it.

The communication on this from Rivian was non-existent. Would’ve like have known in advance they were decreasing the usable amount of the battery.
