Always blaming it on the second shift!
actually, thinking of an improper handoff from first to second which would put the "blame" on first. But those details will never be shared.

My concern is that we will never know. Rivian will sweep this under the rug and act like it never happened.

While this could be a handling issue, it could also be a battery technology issue? It would be nice for Rivian to announce the findings.

With all of the other EV fires in the news, who thinks a government agency will be contacting Rivian this morning?

That's soooo true. "Somebody on 2nd shift did it!"

If they ever find that person named Somebody, they're in deep crap. That person Somebody causes problems in factories all over the US every day.

My guess is human error of some sort, but we'll probably never know. To me, the important thing is that they figure out a definitive root cause & address it.

I also hope that there is not any equipment or other damage related to 20 mins worth of water being sprayed.

Having worked in a big factory that had a fire which made the news….you’re overthinking this.

there will be an OH&S report from the state agency that handles these things, yes. It’s a boring plain old industrial accident. Nobody even died.

It’s unlikely Rivian will announce the findings. The fire dept will put out a press release that won’t say much more than any of the news articles.

They will find it was human error by someone on the other shift. Those lazy fuckers never put tools away and take shortcuts. Ask anyone in any factory anywhere.

and remember, safety manager rule #1…it’s not a lost time incident if the ambulance goes to the back door and no one sees it ?

They should have enough drainage to handle that much water, given what they’re building and the requirements of dealing with an incident with product like that.

a company like Rivian will have processes on processes and their safety people are probably secretly excited to get to write a bunch of reports, because OH&S people are weird.

Most accurate thing I've read on these forums. Period.
I mean, it’s probably good for outcomes thst most of them are so weirdly passionate about their work but…

do I have to file a hot work permit if I might break a sweat? Is stubbing my toe a near miss? That paper cut needed a bandaid which had to be signed for…
It was on my mousing hand, I have to go home ?

I used to work at a large scale lithium ion battery plant and I can tell you that incidents like this happen sometimes. It could be something as simple as R&D cutting into some of the cells which can cause a fire to start. Just a guess but I can say that it does happen and there is nothing nefarious or major cause to be concerned.

As a Bolt owner preparing to hand my sweet little car over to GM on a buyback :crying: , this has me very concerned too. It is basically a "sub module" that is causing the extremely rare fires in the Bolts. This is, has been and will be, an issue for all EVs. But, for ICE vehicles too. RAM has a recent recall on their new diesel trucks for catching on fire and owners are being told to park their trucks away from garages and vehicles. We live in an explosive world surrounded by all our batteries and volatile fuels. https://news.pickuptrucks.com/2021/10/recall-alert-131000-2021-22-ram-hd-chassis-cab-fire-risk.html

Will this keep me from buying/owning an EV...NO WAY!! I'm not that concerned.
After reading about the Bolts catching fire, I was planning on parking my Rivian outside for the first week or so until I gained confidence in it. It would suck loosing the truck but my house and other cars is another story!

because OH&S people are weird.
Years ago, I was in a safety class and the Safety guy was talking about steel toe shoes. Went on to tell a story about "a guy" that lost his toes because he didn't wear his safety shoes. He then sat on the table, took off his shoe and sock, and held his foot up. He was "the guy". o_O

Yeah, they are weird.

I can't think about industrial safety without thinking about this video!

You must work where I work. I've seen safety reports for papercuts and stubbed toes. Bee stings too (non allergic people).
