I have driven a Tri Gen2 when I was in Denver for work after I got my T and it was very nice. Can’t justify the Tri, as cool as it is.

Unfortunately I’m about 4 hours+ from closest Rivian spot, and there’s basically no used Gen1’s for sale near me to try and drive.

Appreciate the feedback! I really want to hear about range. What does the Gen1 R1S Large or Max actually get realistically? Is Large+ worth exploring at all if I found one?

Realistically until Boston or Connecticut allow for used sales, it would be difficult for me to find a used one up here I think.
Range will vary depending on the conditions. With Gen1 large I see around 2 mi per kWh this time of year. Less if I let the truck cold soak.

I just released a vid of a road trip to Burlington and Lowell Mass from Maryland and my average for all of it (about 1,100 mi) including drive up, driving around after cold soaking, and then the trip back was 1.86 mi per kWh. I drive FAST too and I pass slow pokes who like to lolly gag in the left lane ?

So to figure out range at a given efficiency we multiply the efficiency by the usable capacity of the pack. In this case a gen1 large which is about 131 kWh. 1.86 * 131 =244 mi range.

Now in the mild months I can pull down 2.6 in conserve mode. 2.6 * 131 =340

that’s about a 100mi spread. 1.86 is kind of a worst case. If I would have been easy on it I could have done 2.0 without too much trouble. Also I wasn’t in conserve mode either for this last trip.

you have to purchase and register the used ones in the state it’s sold.

Wow, they just dropped a ton of used Quads, I count 50! Some with just a few hundred miles like this one which is a steal for $73K

Do we know if this will change or any news about used offerings in more states soon? Am I out of luck then since there isn’t an SC in Maine even though I bought a new one and got it delivered here?

Since range seems to be a big factor for you here's a rundown of capacity that may be helpful

Gen 2 Large: 109 kWh
Gen 1 Large: 131 kWh
Gen 2 Large+: 109 kWh (it's actually 141, but software limited to ~109 kWh. In the real world, it's more or less the same as G2 large)
Gen 2 Max: 141 kWh
Gen 1 Max: 141 kWh

With my gen 2 w/ heat pump I'm sitting around 2 - 2.5 in Utah winter conditions at 70-80mph highway speeds. In warm summer weather I was in the high 2s

So with my Max pack I'm getting a little under 400 miles in the summer, 280 in the winter

I tried to buy a used Quad in AZ last year. My guide didn’t know if it was possible and it took several days for him to determine that even if I flew down there to pick it up, I could only register it in AZ. Maybe that will change at some point, but I think that is still their policy. Although it may depend on the state as some are more forgiving of out of state registrations than others.

Anyone know whether I can successfully get a used R1S via Rivian Roamer that isn’t “available” for my zip code? Some have suggested Rivian will deliver elsewhere for their used vehicles, but it’s not clear to me.
Some states yes, some states no. Rivian hasn't been clear on which this is possible.

Yeah, this is pretty complicated in many/most states because of these laws. In Maine you have to get a Tesla or Rivian delivered (or go fly and drive back). Tesla will bring it to New Jersey and then send it with temp tags from NJ since they allow for out of state registration. Rivian seemed to give me a 90-day Illinois temp tag from the Normal facility and shipped it to the Chelsea SC somehow without getting caught up in the fact that MA does NOT allow out of state registration...all very mercurial and confusing.

I have had success with the sales rep I initially spoke with when I bought my T. I am asking him if it is possible. There appear to be a few used Large/Max available in VA and FL, which I could potentially drive or fly to if they allow out of state registration...

Yeah I would reach out to Rivian sales to ask. The reason being is that this is constantly changing and an answer today may not be accurate tomorrow. In some cases they will let you come pick it up, though they will not ship it.

Rivian 2025 R1S Tri
I recently moved from a Y performance to a 2025 R1S Tri Max W 20”AT. It’s twice the vehicle. My benchmark is SF to Tahoe and back. My 300 range in Y could not get me to Tahoe without a charge. (200 mile distance but climbing to 7500 and then down to 6400). Coming back I could limp in w 10 miles maybe. R1S w AT shows maybe 340 fully charged, and I arrive w 60 or so left. Mostly driving in conserve mode. I make it back w 140 or so left. This vehicle wasn’t cheap but it’s super nice and no regrets.

If anyone is interested, I got confirmation from the sales team that VA and FL (only east coast used right now), will allow me to buy and come pick up used, and then register here in Maine after getting temp tags there. Which is great, and lets me know my options as they don't seem to have any timeline for more states offering used in the near future.

My question for folks is now: what should I look out for in a Gen1 R1S? In particular, I know there was a change to the subframe, audio, 12V battery(s) and general suspension/drive feel that were hardware and software. Is there a VIN number range I should avoid, etc?

Thank you for clarifying this.

I’d look for a late model Gen 1 2023/2024. Some have suggested most of the important upgrades to subframe and suspension happened after vin 13000 for the R1S. I have 2023 Aug vin 18xxx and it has the cast subframe, Gen 2 knuckles and dampers. The 2024 models have later revisions of the Gen 2 dampers (not sure what was changed with each revision.) I don’t notice any ride quality issues with my 2023 and it’s been flawless so far. I think the biggest issues with suspension, subframe, etc were with the 2022 LEs and maybe some early 2023s.
