Hey all. New 2025 R1T. I've noticed that on 'Auto' mode, the HVAC system just keeps heating past the set point. For instance, I set it to 69F but the car gets really hot. When I check the app, it tells me the cabin is at 73F. The system is on auto, fan is on medium, recirculate is on, back seat is off and the front seats are synched. Tried a hard reset but the behavior persists. Any ideas to fix this? Thanks. NP

More than with any vehicle I’ve ever had, you can ignore the temperature numbers in your Rivian. It’s a weird system, but you should go more by how it feels to you than what the numbers are set at. A couple weeks ago Rivian even sent out an email about winter driving where they reminded us to set the heat above 78 degrees for effective heating on really cold days.

If playing with the settings doesn’t get you where it’s supposed to be, then I would contact service, but I bet it’s just that you need to get used to how this system works best.

That’s helpful. Good to know. I’ll go more by feel.

Try powering off the HVAC from the HVAC screen, wait a few seconds, and power back on. This has worked for me more than once with temperature issues. You would think a reset would solve it but....

Also, it seems to be more stable if you have 2nd row heating on.

On auto, I kept losing my vent settings each day. Turning off auto fixed that.
After last update, or just randomly, my heater kept going up also. Running the heat setting all the way up and then all the way down maybe made that go away. Probably not, as the vehicle fixes itself sometimes.
I'm an owner since July 22, and the two things hardest to learn are the HVAC, and the subtitles of the turn signals.

Thanks. I’ll try that, setting temperature all the way up and then down.

Hey all. So I’ve tried all the suggestions above. Setting the temp all the way up and then all the way down as well as turning off and on the HVAC. I’ve also done several reboots. The issue, however, seems to persist. The system heats past the set point when in auto mode. Today, I set it at 63 and the car got really warm. I checked the app and it said the car was at 70. It was about 20 outside. Other things I’ve noticed:

-If I set the temperature at a lower temp then the car is, the climate screen will show blue coming out of vents. However, if I put my hand on the vents, I fell warm air.

-If I put the system in manual mode and turn it down all the way to LO, the air coming out is colder but not AC cold if you know what I mean. Now, it was 20 outside today so maybe the heat pump can’t really produce air that cold.

Has anybody else experienced this? I certainly see lots of HVAC problem threads but has anyone had this specific bug too and found a fix?

Thanks in advance for the thoughts.

Update. Today I had some time and tested the HVAC with the R1T in my garage which I keep at 15C/59F. The HVAC appeared to behave normally and reached the set point without overshooting. Earlier in the day as I was driving around, it again blew right past the set point and kept heating. The car was a sauna. It was 17 outside. So it appears to be struggling when it’s below freezing. Does that make any sense? Anyone else experienced this?

Yep, on mine if it's below about 35 outside I have to turn it down to 66-68 to keep it from roasting me out of the truck.

So called tech support last week who booked me into the SC today for my overheating issue.

SC reached out last Friday asking for when the issue occurred so they could look at the logs. Got back to me yesterday saying they couldn’t find any anomalies but wanted me to come in to physically check the sensors. Turns out one was not properly calibrated which they fixed. They confirmed everything else hardware-wise was working normally.

Drove off and unfortunately, didn’t really see an improvement. Returned to the SC and tried the system with the tech. He acknowledged the behaviour but reconfirmed all hardware was fine and it was all likely firmware/software-related suggesting the system adjusts air temperature based on outside temperature almost regardless of the UI setting. He assured me they would escalate internally and report back to me and added Gen 2 issues were fairly recent, at least at their SC.

Looking forward to a long term fix but pleased with the speed at which my SC could fit me in and then the staff there. All very competent and professional.

In the meantime, I’m finding 66 makes it somewhat tolerable in most circumstances, as does manual (auto).

If anybody has SC interactions on this or hacks to work this finicky HVAC, pipe in!

Personally I don't use "auto" mode. Every time I tap it it does wild & unpredictable things (changing around my vent configuration, etc.). Have much happiness with the climate control just setting everything manually myself. May not work for you but worth a shot? Good luck.

I have noticed that when I added defrost to my everyday morning scheduled pre-condition before work that it will show temps up to 104 degrees, but by the time I leave for work it is not that hot. I then turned defrost off to test and it heated to my setting of ā€œ68ā€ and it stayed there. So maybe if the defrost is on it is overheating to make sure windshield gets defrosted and clear? I’ve done no real testing so just my observation.

Good thought but defrost isn’t on, nor do I precondition the R1T. The car is in my heated garage and when I leave, itā€˜s got the floor vents and the window vents on. That’s it. Heat is initially ok but after a while you realize that it just kept heating past the set point as the R1T is turning into a Scandinavian dry sauna. ;-)
