Sounds like bad business practices....
The new cell and pack structure takes advantage of new technology, applies lessons learned from R1 models, drastically reduces weight, and significantly reduces assembly time. All of which are crucial to the aim with R2 to produce at 2-3x the rate of R1 while reducing cost of production.

You think it would be smarter to cram a 10 year old battery cell and pack design that was developed for a totally different form function and cram it into a much smaller vehicle?

As long as the base model R2 is $45-50K, they can price the over the top models at whatever crazy price they want.

I’m guessing the tri will only come with the “max pack”. On the R2 I’m going to say 100kWh for it. Going to guess the tri is rated somewhere around 3mi/kWh so that puts the range at a max of 300miles. I’m going to guess 303.

For pricing, I think the majority of the R2 will sit at a (small) premium to the MY. But there really isn’t a competitor to the R2 Tri there (MYP will likely be far off performance wise). If the MYP is $59k, I think a “base” tri will be $65k with the ability to add even more options and end up around $72k. Maybe they’ll offer a launch version tri that includes everything at $69k.

Performance wise, I expect 0-60 in 2.75s and a 10.8sec quarter mile. Zero reason. Just what I’m hoping for LOL.

R2 Tri-motor shouldn't exist, a dual with a software performance unlock is more than enough...

Here's my guess
1) It'll cost $75-85K, It'll have an updated suspension and staggered tires.
2) Range will be 270-ish.
3) Q4 2026
3) It'll have similar color pallet to R1 but slightly changed.
270 Miles is likely a 77kwh pack based on what we expect regarding efficiency of the R2. At the price point you're expecting, I'd expect a pack size of 105kwh and a range of 400 miles or more.

No one really knows these answers.

  1. What will a tri-motor R2 cost? They said ~70k, but with Trump and his tariffs who knows what the actual cost will be, maybe 90 maybe 65 maybe 70.
  2. How much range do you feel we can realistically expect from a tri-motor R2? No one knows it would only be a guess. I think somewhere between 250 miles up to 500 miles
  3. When will it be available? They said 2026 but do any of really know the answer
  4. Colors?....will it mimic the current tri-motor R1S lineup? My guess is it will come in black white silver and a few others. How would anyone know this?

For a vehicle that is not even available for almost a year you are assuming way to much.

The pricing for the tri will start at the price of the Dual standard R1S. Also expect performance to be slower than the R1S Tri. Probably 3.1-3.2 0-60. I expect range will also be lower. 290ish. They need to maintain a reason on the top trims to buy an R1S. This is the same way many car companies operate. The cars that will be very competitive will be the single motor and dual.
I think they’ve already stated it will be <3.0sec.

I have three R2's on order. Two for my business, one as a gift for my Mom.
My goal is to get a top tier tri-motor for myself for my business and have it wrapped and branded, another matching one (but likely dual motor) for my employee, and likely a dual motor for my mom as well.

Really excited to see more information on the R2. I've seen it in person at the Rivian Space here in Denver and it's a slick (seriously so much smaller) little vehicle. I can't wait!!!
You're a good son!

Thank you! She deserves so much more. It started with her in her little Audi Q3 wanting a rooftop tent and wanting to go off roading/camping with me.. I was like why don’t we just trade that in and get you a Rivian and get a rooftop tent to match! I’m excited to go on little camping adventures with her in our Rivians.

I sincerely mean that. I had a wonderful mother that I lost at a young age. I wish I could have done more for her. Glad that you're doing this because they do a lot for us.

It's a guess at point. They could offer single motor and dual motor with LFP, dual performance and TRI with NMC.

I would guess they want to hit like 3 - 3.5 mil/kwh on the epa cycle so a 400 mile configuration would need 114- 133kwh usable capacity. I can't see them getting efficiency above 3.5. And the Tri-motor will likely use the same pack but be a good bit lower efficiency.

I really hope they don't do more than 2 pack sizes. Just an LFP and NMC with as much as the pack can hold.

Only if the party includes Tarot or palm readers, those folks don't stand a chance.
Correct @Schroederhc. As I stated at the very start:
"Yes, at this point it's very early and it's speculation. But it's reasonably fun to have a space to focus on the following as we get closer to 2026"...

Not expecting anyone to have exact answers at this time. But some things Rivian is currently doing with their GEN 2 R1 rollout may help gauge how they may rollout the R2's.

I wonder if the Trimotor will come out first. I can't recall which interview I saw, but I swore I remember RJ saying that at least for the R3s, the X will come out ahead of the others in 2027. If that is true, then I wonder if they would push the R2 trimotor out earlier than later to give it some spacing between the two? My memory is so bad, it might have been all a dream and wishful thinking on my part.

That is a good question, might depend on supply chains. I’m sure the margins for the tri are much higher which is good for a company and why most people release top tier trims first. The flip side is you want to get as many out the door while the interest is high so if motors are constrained at all might be better to delay those.

I honestly thought with the R1 that they would do top tier first, though it would be the max battery but that did not come out until 2 years later.

My wife does not need the tri but if that is out first we will go with it.
