In my professional opinion, MFA should never be tied to SMS. E-mail is the better of the two options from a security standpoint.
Between security and convenience/expediency... there has to be a balance. And some security is better than none. And some convenience is also better none.

So true. I am 47. But I'm also a test pilot and have been for 20 years. But what do old folks like me know about safety tech.

From a purely anecdotal perspective - I’ve had more issues with PAAK than my FOB. And there are waaaay more threads on here about PAAK issues than FOB issues.

if your tech experience is flawless, count yourself lucky.

This makes no difference if the vehicle and person needing access and the person who does have keyfob and keycard are miles apart. If MFA is set up to text messaging (the way it should be) instead of email, the response time is mere seconds. And if on iOS, one doesn't even need to look at the text message or memorize the code. Once message received, you can just tap on one of the entry boxes and iOS will enter the code for you. This demonstrates why PAAK is superior. It does the same thing a rudimentary keyfob does and much much more. I get why some might cling to familiar old tech. But it's not like the alternative to the keyfob is a supercomputer deep in the bowels of NORAD. You're just tapping on icons displayed on a screen instead of tactile buttons on simple 2.4 GHz emitter. Plus, just look at the difference in battery capacity. You are far more like to find a dead keyfob—when you actually need to use it—than a dead phone. The tech isn't the problem. It's irrational resistance towards something deemed new... which is odd because you've clearly successfully made the leap from ICE to BEV. Emergency situation? If OP's kid can text dad, she can call dad or call 9-1-1.

Since delivery in mid '23, I have never been challenged by MFA when using the Rivian mobile app. It only happens when I access my Rivian account through Safari.
Not sure why you're upset with me. I was simply giving the OP options since he/she clearly has a problem with MFA.

I use PaaK 100% of the time without issue, and am well aware of how to tap to enter an MFA code using iOS, but thank you for letting me know how you feel :)

That's kind of like comparing rotten chicken to rotten fish, they both stink.

Upset? No. Just rationally listing out the pros and cons.

If this is an issue then either install the Rivian widget on your phone (likely still require period 2FA though) and unlock from widget or buy the key fob for $250 and it works just like any other car
I have the widget on my phone and I can't unlock or really do anything directly from it. I have to touch it, which then launches the app, and then perform the function, which seems stupid to me.

I’d suggest giving her a key card for such times if you have a concern with the app?
Certainly an option if she can be trusted to not drive the vehicle illegally. Valet mode is on the development roadmap, but has yet to materialize. It would be perfect for this use case.

That sounds more like an issue with your phone, not Rivian or your car. Do you quit out of the Rivian app every time or do you leave it running in the background? My only issue with iOS widgets is a graphical syncing issue (widget not always showing matching lock/unlock state). But it is an "old" phone. I hardly ever use the widgets. It's not any faster than opening the app.

I tested both when I posted. Both took less than five seconds. I'm guessing the OP's e-mail might be greylisting. Which, consequently, should mean it's quicker next time too.

You might have a phone issue - I can lock/unlock directly from widget

Interesting. Will have to run it to ground today. I'm on an iPhone 14 Pro Max and distinctly recall trying to unlock the R1S directly from the Widget and it not doing anything.

@Joefly78 - sounds like bad timing. I can't remember being prompted for this by the app, but it must've happened? Definitely frustrating - I generally feel that way about app updates: many, many times I go to do something (like turn music down in my house) and the app won't do anything until an update.

i sometimes have a long delay when unlocking from the widget (iPhone 15) but if I use the control center unlock action or activate climate control it seems to be much more reliable.
