It would be nice if the owner were warned their vehicle cannot use the maximum kw and should move to a lower rated station.

Here I sit at an EA where the 2 “up to 350 kW” spots have a Bolt charging.

This would be very annoying if I were on a long road trip. Thankfully not.

Yeah I’ve seen this many times. Yet another reason why the Tesla stations are better. No bolts clogging up the good chargers they can’t even take advantage of.

Lol.. Rivian can't charge at 350KW either... so let others that can charge faster use that charger.

Haha

Valid point. At least, I usually average 170+, so at least I am over 150. What does the Bolt max out at, 60 or so?

I will not use a Tesla spot, unless I must

150kW is usually sufficient for a Rivian, keeps the thermal throttle in the summer to a minimum and typically results in the same energy transfer over time as a 350 running at 212-220kW.

On a 150 sometimes the vehicle will still pull a bit over into the 160 range.

The 220ish kw maximum on the Rivian tapers pretty quickly, so unless you're just doing a quick charge and go in the lower half of the battery it really doesn't make much difference between the 350 and 150 (which actually seem to peak around 170) kw stations at EA.

Also, at least across the dozen or so EA sites I've visited in the Midwest and Southeast, most of the 350kw cabinets aren't working at any given time, so I rarely even bother to try them anymore.

In my part of the world, Tesla SC sites are rarely even close to full (certainly -much- less likely to have a wait than EA) and have near perfect reliability. It's probably a limited time window while that's the case, but I don't even bother trying EA sites any more.

Actually... Tesla opened up to GM a few months ago. I tested my daugther's Bolt at a Tesla charger pretty recently. It worked fine - chugging along at a 49kw charge. Luckily its only a 65kwh battery.

Yeah, but at 49kw, it would still take 1.3 hours to deliver 65kwh.

My idea still stands.

When the initial handshake is done, a max “speed” warning would not be a bad idea. I believe most people are not aware of their vehicle’s charging speed limitation.

Only if you arrive at the station with a dead battery, the normal 20% to 80% DCFC would only take 45 min or so for a Bolt.

I'm not saying I encourage her (she is 17) to take the Bolt to a Tesla charger... but as an over protective dad, I made sure she has the adapter in the glove compartment. It is a solid backup if she ever gets stuck.
99.999% of the charging on that car is in the driveway on a level 1 (my R1T has the level 2).

I mostly tried the Tesla charger just out of curiosity and to show her how to use the adapter (and to activate it in the MyChevrolet app) if she ever needed it.

You can get 170-173 out of the 150s. I think the normal difference in time for me between a 150 and 350 charger is less than 5 minutes unless I’m under 20%.

(start humming Bad Boys the COPS theme song) Whatcha gonna do when the Hummer EV (charging at 300kw) comes for you charging your slow Rivian at a 350kw charger... ?

You would save well less than 5 minutes on a 350 kW vs 150 kW EA charger on a 0-80% charge. You wouldn't even save much time if you were driving something with a better charging curve like an Ioniq 5.

It's not worth getting annoyed, especially if you don't know whether the lower-power stations were available when the Bolts arrived.
