Reminder: Rivian Promised Level 3 "Eyes Off the Road" Autonomy on Gen 1

I love my Rivian overall but I just found this in the Wayback machine and wanted to revisit and show some of the newcomers that we were, in fact, promised much more advanced autonomous driving in Gen 1 vehicles than what was ultimately delivered. I know they have their excuses, but I can't help but feel that this is wild false advertising on Rivian's part. When Tesla faced this situation, they provided FREE hardware upgrades to the next gen ADAS hardware for older models.

There were supply chain issues due to covid. Rivian couldn't put in the cameras and tech they wanted to because it was either too expensive or unavailable due to the reduced production and factory shutdowns. Just like tons of legacy manufacturers shipped vehicles without features they were supposed to have during that same time period.

I don't know what recognizing it now is going to do, there's nothing that can be done about it.

I agree. I do feel like Rivian has over promised and under delivered in this area. My 2018 Model 3 can do a lot more than my 2022 Rivian.

The Gen 2 is significantly better than the gen 1, and we are getting hands off soon.

I believe they will do hands-off. That isn't that hard, they could turn the capacative touch requirement off tomorrow no matter how good the eye tracking actually is or able to replace it.

Eyes-off-the-road autonomous driving, I put the chance of that happening within the decade at essentially 0% on the current platform.

Since you're using Tesla as a shining example of customer satisfaction, and making good on promises...

Did Tesla keep their original preorder pricing of the first roadster? No, because it cost more than they projected to build. Did they eat the cost? Nope, they passed it straight on to the reservation holders.

Did Tesla ship a 500 mile Tri motor cybertruck for the promised 59k? No, becuase it cost too much to build and the battery even with the "pack in the back" can't deliver that range, and is an additional 16k on top of the 100k

Did Tesla milk owners on FSD promises for nearly a decade? Yup.

Did Rivian honor preorder pricing despite the need to increase prices by over 20%? Yup.

Did Rivian have to deal with a supply chain shortage and have to pay a premium to suppliers die to no relationships/low volume? Yup

Does Rivian owe us a full redo of the hardware to make good on that missed feature? I don't think so. But I do feel they should try to bring it closer to what was expected without a hardware swap.
