Read this on a Hugf Post article.

As Tesla CEO Elon Musk implores his employees not to sell their stock even though “it feels like Armageddon,” Tesla owners are trading in their vehicles at record levels.

That’s according to data tracked by the U.S. car shopping website Edmunds, which found that March 2025 represents the “highest ever share” on record of Tesla trade-ins toward new or used purchases at dealerships.

Teslas accounted for 1.4% of the cars traded in through March 15, up nearly 300% from the same month last year, when just 0.4% of trade-ins were Teslas.

If they're trading in due to hatred of the CEO I feel sorry for them as people. Imagine if Hitler ever commissioned a vehicle to be built.. .who on earth would ever purchase that vehicle ?

I'm not a Tesla fan but seems silly to me to base your car choice on current events and politics. Elon was this crazy for a while so not really an excuse for abandoning now.

Also the nut jobs attacking Tesla cars are all sorts of unhinged, these were the people who wanted ev's to save the planet and now torching them due to politics. How is that really helping their goal of a more sustainable planet?

He was crazy but still wasn't going completely off the rails until his purchase of Twitter. He has been lying through his teeth for 10 years about FSD and when he removed lidar from consideration I knew I would never drive a Tesla. He thinks he can overcome physics with AI and that's just another example of a rich man with a god complex.

I’m guessing there were a lot of people who had no idea how crazy he was before. Not everyone pays attention to the side stories in the Tech section of news sites.

But when you’re elevated to the level of notoriety he’s at now, everything is front & center.

To be honest, I didn’t realize it until the last few years (just before the whole Twitter thing). I had a coworker who’s absolutely despised him for over a decade. He told me how much of an a-hole he was, and I didn’t believe him.

Which simply says that 98.6% of trade-in were non-Teslas and that going up from 0.4% to 1.4% is probably due to leases expiration for people who didn't want to get another Tesla.

Many reasons for that includes what you all like point to as well as other incentives and options from other automakers. There are really low cost alternative leases out there currently.

If one considers economy tightening of the belt, personal expenditure on a vehicle payment may be headed lower simply to conserve funds in uncertain environments. Also vehicle payments have fallen behind to a record level, meaning that more people are past due over 60 days on their payments.

Its hard to actually make any meaningful interpretation without the entire data and the context.

I want to see a Rivian with the counter-culture sticker:

I bought this before I knew Musk was awesome!

Also the nut jobs attacking Tesla cars are all sorts of unhinged, these were the people who wanted ev's to save the planet and now torching them due to politics. How is that really helping their goal of a more sustainable planet?
These morons are releasing thousands of toxic substances and CO2 into the air. And every personal Tesla they damage means parts/repair money for Tesla. How can anyone be this stupid?

This thread will get killed due to politics in no time. Yes, there are a huge number of people dumping Teslas at discount prices because they no longer wish to be affiliated with the brand or its CEO. Our house is among them. Rivian is a key beneficiary of that trend as well as the trend to steer clear of Tesla and its products in the future.

This Tesla dumping may finally be the catalyst to re-value TSLA to something that approximates rationality. We shall see. In any case, this is terrific for Rivian and I think the numbers at the end of the month will bear that out.

And every one of those dumped Tesla's will be purchased by someone happy to get them at a discounted price.

Not the point. Brand loyalty is important. When larger than usual numbers of people “dump” their Teslas (for whatever the reason) for other vehicles, those are lost future sales, supercharging, repairs, etc. If enough people avoid the brand, say in the European and Canadian markets (as we are now witnessing) that’s gonna add up to hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue.
Just saying…

Counterpoint.. at the right price every vehicle sells, and the people getting the great deals on the "dumped/discounted" Tesla's will be the new loyal Tesla customers of the future who will purchase second vehicles, need repairs, etc. Loose one/gain one...

The main issue with people dumping their teslas on mass is that it drives down resale value. And that in turn disincentivizes new buyers who dont want to buy a car that is going to depreciate massively in the next few years - even more than average EVs.
Low resale value also forces the seller of new cars to drop their prices and offer Better deals, resulting in reduced revenue.
