I’ve been checking out used R1t’s and noticed a lot of them have entries for Montana in the carfax like this one. Is there a reason for that?

any thoughts on this one? mileage seems kind of high at 39k

thanks!

Low cost of registration, probably. Driving around LA you’ll see a lot of Mercedes, Porsche, Lamborghini, etc with Montana plates… seemingly more than you’d imagine there would be given Montana’s relatively modest total population.

I didn't know until I talked to my friend in Montana a couple of years ago. The state does not require an annual inspection like CA or a bi-annual inspection like AZ; therefore many people registered in Montana especially those cars with check-engine light on. Still... that doesn't explain why there are many R1s there.

Who is getting annual inspections in CA?!? Smog check on my old car was every two years but that didn’t start until it was already like 10 years old.

Sorry, my bad... I live in CA for the last 40+ years and I still got it wrong. 😅

That's a super early VIN, I think that came from a guy in Kalispell who works at Rivian.

I’ve heard of a common tax scam in Montana.

I can’t say I fully understand the details, but I believe Montana has no sales tax on vehicles purchased by a business.

Some people create companies in Montana, sometimes when there isn’t really a business behind it. Then they purchase vehicles and register them to the business, while living and driving in other states. They avoid sales taxes and registration fees in their home state.

It’s probably plenty illegal, but not at the top of law enforcement’s priority list.

Montana has no sales tax, so people skate their local sales tax by creating an LLC in montana and then registering their car to their llc address, there is a whole industry based on this and attorneys that's all they do lol.....your local state may or may not try to crack down, in Texas if you get pulled over the officer may or may not care, some of them know what's up some don't

I bought my S 2 months ago. Also had a Montana carfax, but always in Ca. In my case, i think it’s the leasing company.

Lots of the used ones showing MT registration were processed through Rivian purchasing prior to their pre-owned sales so they showed up having MT registration if only for a short while, and then were sold on Carmax, Carvana, Autotrader, etc.

2 years 11 months old by carfax. Looking at the maint history, I'd guess someone took ownership around 6/1/22. (title was issued a couple months later) 39k might be very slightly high? VIN 3236, about a thousand lower than mine (2 yrs 10 months), I'm at ~ 32K

I'm surprised no rivian service history is listed. Mine was in for service 4 times the first 13 months, and that didn't include recalls where they came to my house a couple times. There surely has to be a rivian service history somewhere, I'd ask for that. At least recalls, but prob more.

This would have been about 80K new, so 75% of the sales price (ex tax), doesn't seem a great bargain, Good amount of warranty left, I assume transferable to you, but not 100% sure. I'd double check that.

No way it has original tires of course, ie the ones installed at 103 miles. I wonder why it needed new tires at 103 miles? The lack of rivian service history and the new tires at 103 miles, makes me suspicious of the carfax report.

Mine is very similar vintage, still feels more like a new vehicle than used to me. To bad there are no actual pictures.

Most Rivian leases ive seen show a Montana registration. I believe there’s a tax savings for Chase bank to have all their leased vehicles registered in Montana.
