Those shouldn't be an issue here as the subsystem responsible for AA/CP shuts down when the doors are closed and there are no occupants in the vehicle.
I added a $5 USB C switch/dongle to the EVSportsline AA/CP screen so that we can turn off/on - irrespective of whether the vehicle is being driven or parked. The main reason being my phone kept connecting to that AA/CP unit anytime I'm nearby while at home (effectively via both bluetooth and wifi), and I had to consistently fiddle with it, which was solved by that switch.

Is that going to be an issue w.r.t EVPlay device/software?

Long pressing anything is annoying AF for tasks that require frequent use. You won't be switching back and forth in rapid succession, but often enough where having to long press a button to do so each time is going to drive you nuts.

The "janky" button is fast, reliable, can be mounted anywhere, and doesn't require taking your eyes off the road to press.
is it small enough to mount on the back of the steering wheel? My old grand Cherokee had buttons on the back and I found them well placed. Near your hand but out of sight!

No extra wires (it is completely wireless), double-stick foam tape so it is secure, but not permanent. It's black, and I have mine mounted to the side of the center console, down towards my seat (check out the video on evplay.io if you haven't already). No one can see it but you, it blends right in. It becomes second nature since your arm is most likely resting on the arm rest already.

There a few obstacles with a gesture:

· There isn't really any available real estate across all the screens, on both the RIvian UI and the EV Play UI. You also have to consider what might appear in those locations in future updates, on both devices.

· A gesture would require modification to the Rivian UI, and that starts getting into that grey area of IP and warranty. It also is something that Rivian could patch pretty easily.

I understand the want to have it built into the Rivian UI, and perhaps that will happen in the future. But as someone who has used this regularly for months, I would not use a built-in gesture even if it were there.

I think if anything, a long press of the right thumb wheel on the steering wheel could be an option. But again, I'm not a fan of long pressing anything in this particular use case.
If it an unused button, could it be programmed to work with just a regular press?

This is fantastic. I have paid $450 for getting AA upgrade on my Mazda from the dealer and would strongly consider this.

One thing I did not see is a button to trigger the Google assistant, like the ones on cars with AA/CP. I would want it to stick on the dash or behind the steering wheel.
I actually think this could eventually be achieved by long pressing the EV Play switch button. This is at the top of my internal future feature list.

Currently though, you can pull up the voice assistants simply by saying Hey Google/Hey Siri, which gets picked up by your phone.

Probably just slightly too big but the remote is an RF universal, so it might be possible to find something that fits behind, or attaches to, the steering wheel. The switch relay has a learning feature to pair different remotes.

Possibly in the future....but which button in the Rivian is unused?

A few minutes after you leave the vehicle and close the doors, the device shuts down. At that point it is impossible for it to connect via AA/CP (the vehicle waking has zero effect as well). Now if someone unlocks and/or opens the door and you are somewhere in the house, it will try and connect.

By the way, you can turn off automatic connection and set it to manual. That way, you have to initiate the AA/CP connection from either your phone or EV Play each time.

Definitely hopeful this pans out. Subscribing so I can check back after the reviews come in. Good luck with your product launch!
Thanks!

Blah, blah, blah. Enough talking Alex. Time to start shipping. I've got my OpenPIlot installed and with this my truck will almost be complete from a SW perspective.

Can you add in launch mode for a Gen 1 truck while you are at it?

Stupendous. I can’t stress enough what a great service you are doing the Rivian community! More power to you!

Launch mode would be cool, and maybe also an ejector seat -- just for the passenger side though!

There are 0 use cases for video in motion:

Passenger use - you as a driver don't need to physically look at the screen to be distracted. Think sudden gunshots, honking, screams, explosions, sirens, flashing lights (esp. at night). Plus, you're lying to yourself if you aren't going to casually glance over during that scene from Wild Things when Denise Richards gets out of the pool.
If you want to claim "because it's the law," that's fine. Then cling to that. Heck, even if it were only law in one state, that would be enough, imo. I have a CarPodGo screen now that I can't play video on, but had a Porsche Cayenne where I could both stream and play DVDs. But to argue that it's the "right thing to do" misses the mark, to me, considering every single thing you listed is already just as, if not more, distracting than video in motion would be. It's case by case, driver by driver. Some might "casually glance" like some might spend minutes searching for the right songs on Apple or Spotify. Others might not. These distractions happen both regularly and irregularly. Hearing dialogue from my kids watching a movie in the background? Easy to tune out. A sudden horn, accident, or siren popping up? Much more jarring. Other cars are *always* around. Sirens *regularly* occur. Passengers in your car talking to you happens *all the time* unless you're 100% a solo driver. Needing to adjust the HVAC, switch from one podcast to the next, adjust navigation, search for a new DCFC option - all of that - happens for more often than many people might "video in motion." And it's *their* responsibility to police. They're all massive distractions. To draw the line at "video in motion" which I actually find pretty easy to ignore while driving, in turn ignores every other distraction since the car was invented that are solely the responsibility of the driver. Just say "because it's illegal" and be done with it. I would order EVPlay either way, but choosing a line in the sand to draw because "no, *this* one.. this one is a distraction we cannot allow.. those others.. naaahh.." just falls flat to me.

Cool. Buy it or don’t. Soapbox not needed.
